Back in 2009 reader Arto posted about Space Attack and Star Attack Toys http://projectswordtoys.blogspot.co.uk/2009/12/space-attack-becomes-star-attack-from.html
Mixing Thunderbirds and Outer Space Men they are an intriguing oddity.
In one of those strange circulatory twists, whilst browsing for this range this week, I was taken back to that very post on my own blog! I'd forgotten that Arto had found the company that markets these toys, Ideal Toy Manufactory of Hong Kong and for the hell of it I looked them up too http://www.idealtoy.com.hk/pframe.html
The website somehow looks defunct to me now [no prices] but there are still lots of pictures of the Star Attack range. For posterity here are all the pictures from the site:
Star Figure and Cyber Jet Playset
Shooting Missile Launcher
Included Mat Playset
Jet and Warrior Playsets
Walking Warrior
Walking Warrior Display Box
Cyber Jet
Star Attack 5 PCES per Card
Star Attack Included Mat Playset
Cyber Jet 2 Playset
Jet and Warrior Playset
Cyber Jet 3 Playset
Clearly mockbusting Kenner's Star Wars range of toys, Star Attack [aka Space Attack] are are quite intriguing in that they combine Thunderbirds, Outer Space Men and Star Wars.
Its hard to say whether Ideal Toy Manufactpry of Hong Kong actually produced these toys or whether they simply wholesaled them. The toys packaging is all marked as Made in China.
the second picture down, Shooting Missile Launcher, includes an unusual spacecraft, one which I don't recognise. Do you?
Its repeated in the boxed version fourth from the bottom. This appears to have the wrong title [taken from the site], Star Attack Included Mat Playset. Surely its simply a boxed version of Shooting Missile Launcher?
The numbering system is probably how retailers ordered these toys.
I'm pretty sure I've seen clear tubs full of the Thunderbirds and Outer Space Men miniatures loose too. I imagine that thousands were made and some were sold loose on shop counter tops.
Some toys go under the name Space Attack such as this figures and vehicles playset.
Is the illustration of the three figures to the left lifted from Star Wars?
Do you have any Star or Space Attack toys?
A colourful haul of space oddities. Well researched Woodsy and Arto :)
