I stumbled across this bundle of joy online. Its an old Ebay photo of a long-since ended auction.
What first caught my eye was the Apollo Moon Exploring red and white rocket among the tractors and trains, together with what looks like the red space glider from the same series by Imperial.
But then I noticed the BLUE Cricket P-1 [minus its canon] to the left. What the?
Aren't they usually purple?

Postscript:
Found this close up of the very same cricket! It does look blue!
and by way of elimination, its not the SpaceX cricket knockoff from The Futuristic Space Vehicle series, pictured below, which is clearly metallic green paint.
None of these either!
or any of the other ones we've featured here over the years as seen in the post Cricket Team.
Perhaps it is just how the camera caught the color as the flash washed over it?
ReplyDeleteOr maybe it is a knock off? The usual box of louvers on the front look more like 3 rectangles to me. Might just be my old eyes playing tricks with an old picture though.
Damn I wish you'd flagged that when the auction ran, Woodsy, I'd be most curious to take a better look at that thing... I don't suppose you saved the auction's particulars?
ReplyDeleteCoz I believe that thing is indeed blue. I know some older types of digital camera had serious problems in the green-blue-purple range, but the colours in this pic look okay enough to me.

I've sent you the link Paul and will post a bigger picture of the cricket that I've found.
DeleteYou may be right but I have a modern digital slr camera and my replica cricket which I painted purple and which looks purple still photographs blue.
ReplyDeleteI remember that photo, Kevin. That was the first one you built, right?
DeleteBit of a nuisance that, and no idea what may cause it either.

Yep that's the one although the same effect is still slightly present on my later version.
ReplyDeletethats not a spacex cricket, but clearly a knock off. the front panel is different!

ReplyDeleteThe silver bonnet panel on standard crickets sits on the top of the body in a recess. this yellow panel is sitting in a hole and i tnink is intended to flip over, judging by the small pivot visible on the left. Possibly one of the mexican mouldings?
ReplyDeleteThat small protrusion could also be where the sprue was, Bill, which I think'd be more likely?
DeleteWhat mexican mouldings?

The 'mexican' P3 copter and the T5. No, im adamant thats a flip over panel, possibly to show a hidden gun or simulate engine detail. Ive seen similar gimmicks in many cheap toys
ReplyDeleteYou may be right about the panel, but from photos alone I'm afraid we'll never know for certain.
DeleteSame for its provenance. There were plenty of Hong Kong knock-offs available in the US, so I'd tend to favour that.
