When I was a kid in the Sixties I had a load of plastic horses.
The biggest was my Action Man horse but I had some about half the size and even smaller ones. A whole field full. They were hard plastic. I can't really recall much more and it's odd because I was never really into real horses. I think I just liked plastic animals as a kid.
They may have been called Breyer. Does this ring any bells with anyone?
I had a big toy horsebox, which contained two horses, it might've been Triang? Airfix did some military figures kits, some of which were monted cavalry figures, I had a couple of those, the horses were hard to paint. I no longer have any toy horses but I do own a real one!
ReplyDeleteDon't remember Action Man's horse too well, but I knew he had one. I've still got the Palomino called Thunderbolt that was Johnny West's horse - had it since I was about 10. Picked up another 4 or 5 since then. Incidentally, in the ads in British comics for the Johnny West toys, Palomino was misspelt as Palamino.
ReplyDeleteKev, you have a horse? And its not a model! ha ha. Do you ride it? and yes, Kid, I remember the Johnny West horse, I may have had one. I had the figures - Johnny himself and Chief Cherokee. I loved all those cool rubber accessories like the chestplate and the headgear, mugs and rifles. What a cool toy line that was. Not sure I knew what a Palomino was as a kid. I always think of Franky Valli's song Silver Star when I hear the word now.
ReplyDeleteYep, a welsh cob gelding called Jed. He's a chestnut with a white blaze. Really he's my wife's but I have been known to ride him. Mostly though, he just costs us money!
ReplyDeleteah, so not a gift horse then! It is odd I think that more boys where I lived didn't get into horses. Kids Tv was choc full of them: Champion the Wonder Horse, Black Beauty, Follyfoot Farm [down the road from me now!] and probably more. Horses were a girl thing for some reason when I was a kid. Hard to explain why, they're huge and powerful animals, which is what most boys wanted to be! Not sure if us lads had an 'animal' as such. What did we spend our time doing?
DeleteIt is very noticeable that the vast majority of horse owners (for leisure anyway) seem to be women.
