I've always loved the little silver jet at the end of the SWORD Booster Rocket. Right from when I was a kid sending it flying across my Airfix carpet army circa 1967! Here it is courtesy of Master Bulloch.
In SOLO comics 1967 it gets special mention as a Deep Space Probe/ Probe Craft and is much bigger than it seems on the toy.
Well, as usual when I'm staying at our Daughter's house I find something new. I think its the relaxed atmosphere and the big mac she's got - the computer and not the burger! ha ha! Tonight's offering is perhaps, just maybe, the origin of the little silver rocket. Have a look at the craft on this old pulp novel called Men, Martians and Machines by Eric Frank Russell dated 1955. The cover art is by the hugely talented Richard Powers. So what do you think readers?
It could be Woodsy but by the mid-60s the delta wing shape was already well established and may have been in the designer's noggin' all along just waiting to put it to use on a toy
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Richard Powers pulp cover too!
