Rhino Tactical Response Unit
The Bandai New Captain Scarlet DX Rhino is a big toy. It might not have the iconic lines of the Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle but it’s certainly an interesting design.
Obviously it takes it’s cue from the SPV with five wheels either side, a sloping front and unique way of exiting the vehicle, but this is very much a modern design with a nod to current technology and a obsession for distinctive signage.
The toy has some lovely detail and looking at my photos I do consider how the Rhino would have looked if the series had used miniatures rather than CGI.
It’s packed full of gadgets including sound effects. A front panel slides up to take spring-loaded missiles.
Machine guns can be fitted to the front wings or the top hatch.
The side door flicks open revealing a sliding seat suitable for an action figure.
The top hatch can also take an action figure.
I have to say I'm warming the design of the Rhino. While it has a hard act to follow and could never come close to the unique and pleasing design of the SPV it does have it's own intriguing lines, as well as some good points and on top of that makes a pretty good toy to boot.
And it seats the standard action figures? It must be a beast!
ReplyDeleteIt's about 14" long (36cm) as opposed to the Bandai Cheetah which is around 11" long (28cm)
ReplyDeleteIt's a pity they never made a radio controlled version.
Scoop - great toy! - Great Big Toy!!! It's tough adapting to newer designs when one's heart is firmly planted in the toys of the past. It's funny, but when I was a kid I couldn't wait to see what cool gadgets and means of transportation would herald the coming of the 21st Century. Now that the future is here I find myself being dragged into the 21st century kicking and screaming and wishing for the past again!

Hi.
DeleteYes, I too, have both the Corgi and BanDai versions.
And yes, the BanDai version, is out of
poportion (the rear part).
