Woodsy,
I'm slowly starting to get around to posting my space toys on Toys & Stuff. Today I've got the Marx Space Car from their Tom Corbett set featured:
You're free to copy and paste any of the photos for your blog. I also had to buy some replacement parts for my Deluxe Reading X-500 set and hopefully will be able to photograph it before too long.

For me, these sets are a beautiful example of a transition between the 'Golden (Atomic) Age' look of space toys and the mid-1960's moon landing/NASA influence. Reaching back to the 1920's, 30's, 40's with Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon etc. 'rivet-rocket ships', on up through the 1950's Tom Corbett, Dan Dare Space Patrol etc. until we get to the pure-function extreme of the beloved MEL. So glad that we have Project Sword, Perry Rodan, Japan and many other space toys to keep an eye on style with function.
ReplyDeleteoops, I meant: beloved LEM. (MEL is from Micronauts 'Mobile Exploration Lab')...adjusting medication now.
ReplyDeleteWhat I like about collecting these now as an adult is that I can actually appreciate them more. Getting to know more about the design influences by watching DVDs of the old serials, movies, and TV shows and comparing the progression of toy design over the years has been fscinating. Prior to finding Woodsy's blog here I knew nothing of SpaceX and a rough working knowledge of Gerry Anderson. It's been fun finding out more about Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlett, etc. As a kid in the States my only exposure to Gerry Anderson was Supercar (I vaguely recall a little Stingray but that's all hazy). Later came UFO and Space 1999. There was something Flash Gordonesque in those shows. Still got a lot of catchin' up to do though!
