Hi Paul,
Reading your Xmas Radio Times reminisces reminded me of those ‘Christmas With The Stars’ TV Times extras that used to appear around this time. I’m not sure whether they still do them now as most so called current celebrities and X factor contestants don’t tend to be in vogue for a whole year these days. Anyway, in amongst interviews with Ronnie Corbett and Tommy Cooper etc., the 1970 edition of Christmas With The Stars featured a rather nice article on the fashion of UFO featuring some exclusive photo’s. I’m sure some of the blog readers will be aware of this but for those who don’t I thought I’d send a few pics.
Cheers

I'd heard of the article but never seen it in all its glory. A shame they've got Dolores Mantez and Ayshea Brough a bit mixed up though!
ReplyDeleteIt's almost like a SHADO version of one of those big catalogues our mum's used to get with all the clothing pages (and usually the first glimpse of the toys and annuals available for Christmas at the back). Oh, what were they called? Freemans... hey, wait a minute! You don't think Alec branched out there as well, do you?
:-o
Ha ha, I loved catalogues when I was a kid. In fact my Sister worked for one. Grattans, Kays, Freemans - ahhh, happy days browsing hundreds of pages but mostly toys and all the christmas goodies at the back! The strangest thing my folks got me was a mock Japanese Sword in the ear;y 70's during the Kung Fu craze. The sword was totally blunt I might add! Mail Order was a part of life, which I suppose has been taken over by Ebay and Amazon now. But I bet those cool UFO string vests are hard to find anywhere!
ReplyDeleteoh I used to love Ayesha - anyone remember LIFT OFF ?
ReplyDeleteI loved LIFT OFF With Ayshea! She was the talk of the boys' locker room at school around 1974! I've got an Ayshea LP here at home! UFO was a hotbed of music and dance talent - Ayshea, the dancing Peter Gordeno [my mum's heart-throb] and Gabrielle Drake was the Sis of the late Nick Drake, who is at last acheiving the acclaim he deserves.
ReplyDeleteSuperb to see! I too have seen black and white copies but a colour version is amazing! Thanks for posting it.

I remember Lift Off! There was a column by the same name in Look-in, wasn't there? And I think she also had a regular pop-feature in one of the more music-fashion oriented mags of the time. FAB 208? It was so long ago (not that I'm that old, of course ... I was, erm, told about it ... yes, someone told me).
ReplyDeleteDoubt she actually wrote either, though I liked to think she did.
