Museo Leikki toy museum in Espoo, Finland, has just opened a new special exhibition Time Travel Odyssey 1950 – Childhood and youth of the past, present and future

Displayed in one of the cabinets are some of my space toys which were either manufactured or sold in Finland in the Fifties. 

Many of them are copies of British toys of the era. 

How many can you spot? The exhibition will run until March, 2028.

For it's a Jolly Good Faller

 I recently picked up these two plastic biuldings in a scrap store.

They were dearer than I'd like - £15 the two - but really quite lovely.

There's a smaller Alpenblick mountain restaurant and a large block of flats with shops at the bottom. The tiny detailing ist wunderbar! 

Both are plastic and have wiring, which I assume is for lighting. 

I tried to illuminate them myself with fairy lights but to no great success.

Do you think these are Faller biuldings for train lay outs?

Jonty Alouette

I was thinking how I learnt stuff at school back in the Sixties and early Seventies that had no bearing on my life whatsoever. Even more, I had no idea what they meant.

Alouette is a good example. We must have sung this French song every week. I could the words with my eyes shut. I just didn't know what any of it meant. I could probably say that about any of the language lessons I had and most of the maths lessons too. It all left me a bit cold and in he end school wad a chore. Like Allouette the song, it had no meaning for me. If I was told, I don't recall! 

In later life I became a keen birdwatcher and found out that Alouette meant skylark in French! 

Are there any words you knew as a kid and only found out what they meant later on?

Not wishing to sell my house I made my own Or last year

There are a few other toys with alien pilots a bit like Or.

Here's the Spin Turn M-50 Space Ship minus it's dome.

Here's Parks' Sky Lab with domed pilots.

And a modern version of the foot pedal propulsion system.

A 3 foot wide hovering disc!

And when Or gets bored with his spinner he jumps ship straight into the nearest Robby Robot!

Robo Ball

I saw this a while back, all new to me. Like a robot armadillo, it looks intriguing. Somewhere a battery inserts. I guess the toy rolls and unrolls. Does anyone know? 

It's a Robogoron Gakken Robot Ball from Japan 1985.

I've seen that inner unit before I'm sure. They look like tin panels.

Talking Batmobiles! The Taped Crusader!

 Some toy Batmobiles talk.

I know, I had one.

I think it was the one auctioned here, the left car with the huge bulb canopies.

I remember taking mine apart to get the little record to play again.

Not sure what the other batmobile is. Mego?
