Woodsy and Fellow Moonbasers,

It's been a month or two since submitting one of the tin-litho planes in my collection. This measures 5 3/8" (13.7cm) L x 4 7/8" (12.4cm) wingspan x 2 1/4" (5.7cm) H and fits in perfectly with a slew of other similarly sized aircraft in the collection. Like other tin-litho airplanes of the era, it splits into two assemblies. Enjoy!

PAUL ADAMS, MODEL CITIZEN: GONE SHOPPING!

Following my visit to the latest Auckland fair, I had a week off, so I headed out again on the Monday. This time I visited a model shop I do not often get to, but which does carry second-hand kits.

There I found the remains of a 350-kit collection that had recently come in. I got another batch of vintage kits, and can only imagine what I might have missed.

The first four kits have a New Zealand connection, but are from before I began modelling in the 1970s, so I do not remember them.

RSL Limited (Rayon Surfaces Limited, later Tonka New Zealand Ltd) imported various Japanese kits in to NZ in the 1960s, and sold them under their own name. The Ki-84 Frank, in green plastic, is to 1/50th scale, and was originally made by Marusan.

In the late 1960s Lines Brothers (N.Z.) Ltd. made a number of older Frog kits, with the company name changing to Tri-ang Pedigree (N.Z.) Ltd. in 1969. The Frog F-84 Thunderjet dates back to 1956, and comes in a Tri-ang Pedigree box, silver-grey plastic.

Two older, odd-scale Revell kits made in New Zealand by Lincoln Industries Ltd., Auckland. The PBM-5 Mariner comes in a normal long narrow Revell box, 1/118th scale, dark blue plastic.

The B-47 Six Engine Jet Bomber comes in a taller box, with yellow bands top and bottom, although the artwork is the same height as that on the Mariner. Scale is 1/113th, silver-grey plastic.

Revell Cobra II air racing version of the Bell P-39 Airacobra, in bright yellow plastic. Great box art, 1/45.6th scale.

Testors Hawk P-51D Mustang, in a photo box, but with the aircraft in a nice diorama setting. Missing its canopy, moulded in silver and black plastic, 1/48th scale.

Italian Artiplast Fiat G-55, in 1/50th scale. Light grey plastic, but the bottom of the box shows signs of mould, and the decal sheet would be unusable if you wanted to build the kit.

UPC (Universal Powermaster Corporation) was an American importer of foreign kits, including this ex-Marusan Me-262. Medium green plastic, 1/50th scale.

Czechoslovakia once had a sizable aircraft industry, and the Avia B.534 fighter was built for the Czech Air Force. KP kit in 1/72nd scale, silver-grey plastic.

Hawk was one of the second-level American kit companies, but they made some really nice models, including this Chance Vought F4U-1D Corsair in 1/72nd scale. A great looking model in dark blue plastic, the copyright date 1959 is moulded on the inside of the wings.

Lindberg was another American company, their Henschel Hs-129 is 1/72nd scale. Moulded in green plastic.

Starfix Bf-109G, from Israel, claimed to be 1/48th, but universally said to be smaller. Starfix is regarded as one of the worst kit companies ever, but it is nice to have an example of brand.

Another bagged Airfix kit, the Water Tower from the OO (1/76th scale) Trackside railway accessory range, in light grey plastic. This model is still made by Dapol.

It was another amazing day, even if I had gone through most of my holiday money in two days. Most of the haul comprised kits I have never seen before, except in photographs.

TERRY V'S JR21 LADY PENELOPE TEA SET

The last photo is of the letter that was included in the thick cardboard surrounding box. It's in Dutch, by supermarket Albert Heijn (one of the biggest of the country) and signed by AB Fienieg who was the head of the marketing department at the time. 

Apparently, kids could enter a competition to guess the number of drawings that Brains made for the Thunderbirds. This winner received this set because she (along with other boys and girls) was pretty close but didn't have the correct answer.

Pretty neat piece of history!

Only thing I'm not sure about is the cardboard coasters that seem to be missing, but in another picture I've seen there is also a cutout in the inlay for those coasters and mine doesn't have that. It also says on the box 29-piece tea set and this set consists of exactly 29 pieces.

Not sure what year this was made though, so looking for some more information as well. Also wondering what the worth of this piece would be.

More on the competition that people could enter. It was held in August 1966. Winners were announced in September 1966. You had to be younger than 18 to compete. There were 2000 sets of thunderbirds and tea sets (not sure how many of each) handed out to kids that didn't win the main prize (a visit to the Thunderbird studio!)

It was the first computerized competition where a computer would determine the winners. 27 kids won and got to visit the studio.

The tea set I have bought was won by a girl as she was close to the number of drawings Brains made of the Thunderbirds.

Is That The Coastguard?

 With a home-made mast and a white pen touch-up my Car Boot Gerry Anderson Dinky Amphibious Coastguard is now on duty patrolling the MoonBase moat.

Pilotless, the only figure I could find of the right size was a Napoleon Solo donated by Bill B.

He's on tenterhooks, it's a bad case of THRUSH!

Eager Beaver

Nursing a bloody awful summer cold I've spent a lot of time indoors this week. In between sneezing and coughing I've entertained myself making and fixing stuff.

First up was this old doggy ornament of my Sister's. It was missing tails and one ear. 

Some FIMO later and voila! New ear and tails. It can be returned to my Sis now.

Next on the bench was this old bagged German doll called Miriam. Her left leg was kaput.

Luckily all her broken parts were still in the bag, so with super glue to hand I was able to rebuild it.

Not Jamie Summers but it's a leg of sorts.

The shattered right foot is a work in progress. To add extra strength and surface to the rebuilt leg I brushed it twice with PVA.

Miriam is to be continued.

Next up was further whitening of my new Dinky Amphibious Coastguard. Pics to follow of this.

Finally I've been beavering away at another Action Man uniform, the Mountie, which I loved as a kid.

Finding the jacket at a boot sale was the spark to make a new one.

It had a Deep Impact on Me

 Me and the missus watched Deep Impact last night. After trying a couple of Harlan Coben crime series' intros, which the Missus didn't like, I opted for pure nostalgia.

I have to say I love Deep Impact. There's no point denying it. That Wolf- Biedermann comet takes me right back to the 1990's. We were in our thirties, the prime of our lives, a young family and our daughter, just a kid, lived at home with us.

Yep, Deep Impact is memory lane, wending it's way back to that nostalgic sunlit valley where our youth lingers.

Those rose-tinted glasses are powerful things. Seductive, alluring and the films we saw back then are windows into that distant land.

Deep Impact has a surprisingly low score on Rotten Tomatoes. 38% I think. I would have have scored much higher but then again nostalgia would drive my vote.

The central character, a TV reporter played by Tia Leoni, is the perfect neutral foul for the apocalyptic action around her. I read that Hollywood insiders think she never lived up to her potential as an actress. I saw her in a Jurassic Park film I'm sure. It's true, she sort of disappeared. A shame. Like everyone in Deep Impact, she's getting on in years now.

Robert Duvall, one of the films elders, is 93 these days! All that olive oil and good vino in three Godfather films paid off! His character in Impact, Spurgeon Tanner, the aging astronaut, is played in characteristically reserved Duvall fashion, which I really like. His clean-cut old-timer says one of its best short lines when sees the comet close-up for the first time,

'Mary Mother of God!'

Or something similar. 

Captain Tanner goes on to lead his young crew into the film's heroic heart with an act of selfless bravery as they head into the comet and oblivion. Humanity is saved by altruism. Has that idea had it's day in Hollywood?

My favourite line in Deep Impact, from an albeit short  role, comes from Dr. Wolf at the start of the movie. He's just received Leo Biedermann's astronomy query and is reading through it whilst eating a particularly floppy slice of pizza at the observatory. Punching in the coordinates, he pizza- mutters,

'Well, hi there little fella, where are you going in such a hurry?'

A moment later, staring at the screen, Dr.Wolf drops his food and the rest, as they say, is a disaster film.

But boy I still so want a slice of that pizza!
