JET SET: THE VARIOUS TOY JETMOBILES FROM FIREBALL XL5

Check out Santa's scooter! By Masudaya for Illfelder, its straight from Fireball XL5 and clearly inspired by Steve Zodiac's scooter.

We've seen something like before on MC. There's a Snoopy version out there and here's a snap from one 'Steve Zodiac' from a decade ago comparing a large Space Scooter by Amico to the much smaller but highly collectable Golden Gate Fireball XL5 Scooter.

The Fairylite Jetmobile comes without Zoony but does look nevertheless rather spiffing too.

There is also a fabulous Venus version of the Fairylite Jetmobile pictured on the ever-informative Alphadrome site

Anyone got either of the Fairylite vehicles and the Golden Gate JetMobile? Are they a similar size? Any chance of a snap of the them together?

Anyone got anything like this design at all?

SPACE DUMP

We've seen many of these space toys on Moonbase over the years.

These are a new variation with radars and are wind-up too.

They also have DUMP 'N' GO action! ha ha

Have you heard of Tri-Play Toys ?

I have just discovered a US toy company I have never heard of, and so far I have not been able to dig up anything on them.

Have you ever heard of Tri-Play Toys Inc., 4757 N. Ravenswood Ave., Chicago 40, Illinois ?

I do not know how Art Linkletter fits in, although he did endorse various toys and games.

The company seems to have been active in the 1950s. The lack of a ZIP Code supports an early date. This card back shows some pretty bizarre toys. Well worth looking at, if I can find any information.

SOAR POINT

I love this magazine cover from 1963 I saw online.

Space World with the Dyna Soar.

The Dyna Soar was released as a toy in 1967 by Century 21 Toys as part of the Project SWORD range.

Coincidentally SPACE WORLD is the first part of what SWORD stands for, SPACE WORLD ORGANISATION FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT!

Have you got a Dyna Soar toy?

Spanish Fly: The Congost Rescate Espacial Space Rescue Set

This Christmas I was lucky enough to receive this beautiful toy from my daughter and her family with a little help from Santa too!

Its the Rescate Espacial - Space Rescue - toy set by Congost of Spain 1969.

Its a huge battery-operated toy in a big coffin box, graced with a great photo box lid.

The lovely base plate is made of tin and the artwork of a rocky island is gorgeous.

Like Mattel's Vertibird the helicopter flies round in a circle. Its controlled with three black dials and there's a neat landing pad next to them.

The play value of this set is in rescuing the three magnetic astronauts from the fabulous capsule and place them safely in the rescue boat.

It works really well and here's a short clip of the helicopter in action.

I've yet to master the dials and the movement but all in all I'm thrilled to bits with this vintage beauty from the year of the Moon landing!

Have you anything like this?

DAVID SOUL RIP

David Soul died on the 4th January. I was really really sad. I loved David Soul back in the day as I'm sure a few of you did as well.

My childhood divides neatly into the 1960's and the 70's. In the latter half of the 70's a few TV shows defined the decade and Starsky and Hutch was one of them. The two handsome and super-cool Californian detectives burst onto our screens in the UK on Saturday April 23rd, 1976  [Kojak aired in the UK two years earlier in 1974].

Yep, what a year! first Starsky and Hutch and then that long hot Indian summer. For a while it seemed like Califiornia itself here in drab old Britain!

David Soul became an overnight star in 1976. In the same year he had a number 1 single too, Don't Give Up On Us. This guy could sing as well as jump across cars! I remember mates and me singing Don't Put Your Foot on the Baby for some daft reason at the time. Soul was a talent and with his buddy Mike Glazer they were suddenly pinned up high on bedroom walls allover the country, if not the world!

I think I was too old for pop star posters in '76, turning 17 that Christmas [I had a huge black and white poster of Karloff's Frankenstein over my bed!] but I really appreciated the pazzaz and sunshine of Starsky and Hutch: the street talk, Huggy Bear, the loud action, the cool homes, the rough precincts and above all the leather jacket, cardigan coat and the polo necks and yes, those massive cars [remember the die-casts!] constantly turning on a sixpence and screeching after bad guys. Like Kojak before it, Starsky and Hutch was pure seductive Stateside fun and a real bright moment in our swirling and sometimes drab Seventies adolescence.

In 1979 David Soul starred in what is for me his best work, Salem's Lot. A two-part TV mini-series, often shown as a single movie, it was a milestone in vampire telly.

Tobe Hooper, who directed the seminal Texas Chainsaw Massacre, made Salem's Lot and did something special. Its still incredibly popular today. Soul plays Ben Mears, a successful author, who comes home to Salem's Lot, where fell deeds are taking place in this small American town. Yep, its a Stephen King story.

Who can forget the many great moments in the series! When Soul aka Ben first sees the creepy looming Marsten House again, the Glick Brothers rapping on a bedroom window, the Petrie boy's Dad cross and confused about his son's love of Aurora monsters [that rang a bell!], Straker - the loathsome familiar played so well by James Mason and finally, the hideous Mr. Barlow himself, the hissing Nosferatuesque vampire at the bloody heart of Salem's Lot's malaise.

It was and is a triumph of TV horror and along with Starsky and Hutch before it, a true jewel in David's long and illustrious career.

He shall be sadly missed.

What are your memories of David readers?

David Soul, 1943-2024. Rest in Peace.

FAB1 ON BLUE PETER

I stumbled across this whilst looking for something for the sidebar but its just too cool so here it is on the blog proper.

FAB1 in the Blue Peter studios back in summer 1968.

Its HUGE! They're all in it! Noaksy, Peter and Valerie! Maybe Shep as well!

What do you think? Do you remember this on TV?

FROM ZEROID TO HEROID

Hi there Moonbasers!

I got a little distracted while working on some of my simultaneous projects. I have all three of my childhood Zeroids in a display case I made as a teenager and it's really the worse for wear.

While considering a replacement, I thought again about how Ideal's Zeroids really were one of my favourite toys! The design was AMAZING and they were scaled just right for Major Matt Mason!

Anyway, still in my '66 mind groove, I woke up one morning possessed and HAD to design a Zeroid in their classic style. I already had Zintar: The Explorer, Zobor: The Transporter and Zerak: The Destroyer (pretty dull, no wonder his hands didn't even grip like the other two!)

So, I now give you Zutura: The Replicator!

Complete with all those design features I loved so much as a kid!

A chromed brain under a glass dome... I even pushed back my personal CGI envelope, by shaping the leading edge of the transparency with the digital equivalent of sanding and polishing!

And all those details on the rear deck like the on/off switch!
I didn't originally intend Zutura to be a female robot, but given my design inspiration, it was just a natural development.

And what was that inspiration that provided so many styling hints and gave her that odd name?

-Just a one word clue, Bat fans. ....Batmobile.

Maybe I'll get around to 3D printing her out in a little while, I've already bought the Radio Control drive chain, but making the caterpillar tracks in silicone rubber will be a bit of a task! ...

Happy New Year,
Looey
