LEFT BEHIND IN THE SHIMMER: TWO DISASTER FLICKS

In apocalyptical mood, I watched two American disaster movies this week on Netflix, Annihilation and Left Behind.

Annihilation stars Natalie Portman as a grieving widow professor who enters an alien zone known as the Shimmer - which I think is set in Florida -  in search of her missing husband. Its based on an award-winning novel of the same title by Jeff Vandermeer.

I've seen this flick before and despite being a complete box office flop I really enjoyed it. Its interesting and well-made I thought. There are strange goings-on in the Shimmer and nothing is as it seems. There are also at least two furiously large predators, which set the heart-rate going. It calls to mind other movies like The Wall [German sci-fi], The Mist and Neither the Sea Nor the Sand [based on the novel by erstwhile newsreader Gordon Honeycombe]. I won't spoil anything but I enjoyed this film. I'm surprised it bombed.

Left Behind on the other hand is not like Annihilation, although it is about the end of the world, sort of. Where Annihilation is thought-provoking and interesting, Left Behind is a banal mess worthy of the Razzies it was awarded at the time. Yet I had to watch it!

It stars once impressive actor Nic Cage in an excruciatingly naff role as a Long Island airline pilot. Normally pilots aren't naff at all but somehow the director manages to just up the cringe-worthiness of everyone and everything in this film.  Imagine a terrible day-time TV movie set on a plane morphed with Sunday School. I don't want to give anything away though in case you feel oddly compelled to watch it like I did.

Amazingly when I checked Wiki the original story has a chequered history peppered with law suits and court cases. Who would have thought that this tale could garner such enthusiasm. Even more surprising are the number of sequels, which I don't think I'll be watching. Just not for me.

Left Behind reminded me of a the slow burn of the Stephen King flick The Langoliers if you've seen that. The central effect of people not being there called to mind the 80's cult hit The Night of the Comet.

PRESS RELEASE: YOUNG LUKE SKYWALKER ASSISTING BRITISH POLICE

 

Prior to joining the rebellion Luke Skywalker was at the centre of an eighteen hour long dragnet to capture a stockinged Sith Lord sources close to the young Jedi Knight have revealed today.

Assisting the British Police with their enquiries, Skywalker made the critical phone call that lured the crazed gun-wielding Sith into a trap.

Commenting on Luke's part in the police operation, Sergeant Akbar said: "The Force is strong with this one."

The young Jedi declined to comment but suggested he may return.

VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN'S NEWSFLESH

 Its just been reported in the Karlsbad Medical Journal that Dr. Victor Frankenstein has reached the next stage in his mechanical transformation of body parts.

His first attempt was documented in detail by Dr. Mary Shelley, which resulted in what has commonly become known as The Monster.

Further bio-tinkering on the Monster by Dr. Frankenstein has now achieved a new metamorphosis in the creature's development. 

Frankenstein calls this The Ken.

The Doctor now hopes to do similar work on The Bride and a new 'Barbed' look will be announced in the near future at a major 'flesh' conference in Karloffstadt.

Lockdown Treasures

The relaxation of lockdown restrictions meant that I was able to go out again and visit shops which have been closed for the last year. the good thing about this situation is that vendors have been forced to do stocktakes and clear out old storage. After visiting a corner newsagent near university this week, I was amazed to find these two Clifford Moon Traffic toys in amongst a rack of other toys, so I snatched them quick, much to the amazement of the old girl behind the counter! Unfortunately, this was the sum total of the space toy stock, but she did have some nice buckets and spades if it gets warm!

 

MODEL CITIZEN HEADLINE: AURORA PRISONER FREE AT LAST!

 The prisoner held captive by Aurora's evil and deranged Phantom of the Opera for 50 years has escaped.

It was during a prolonged rendition of Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again that the prisoner managed to flee the clutches of the mad soprano.

He was last seen running through the Aurora box artist's garden clutching the stick he'd used to snaffle the keys.

If you see the escapee don't tell Aurora!

He plans to free his bestie from Castlemare next.
