Telstars in my Eyes

Andy B has just reminded me of another important satellite, Telstar. The first practical communications satellite, it relayed TV pictures around the globe in 1962, predating the more commercial Early Bird. Looking a bit like a Dr Who Mechanoid, the globe shaped satellite was feted in song too, by the british group, the Tornados.

I remember finding the old 45 in my family record collection and was amazed that anyone would write a song about a satellite! Its actually a great tune, with early synthesiser work and weird intro.

One of my favourite representations of the satellite is the Analog cover illustretion by John Shoenherr for 'Trouble wit Telstar', which you can read at Project Gutenberg:

Attached is a scan of the inside front cover. It's from Marvel and mentions Logan's Run, Star Wars and Forbidden Planet.

I recognise a few of these toy figures on the cover of this old book I saw online but I can't ID the chap with the red Fez on his head or the young lad bottom right.

Any ideas readers?

Incidentally, I have the Action Man version of this book.

BASIL BRUSH AND HIS CAR

 

Picking up on the recent TV nostalgia thread here's a toy car I don't think I had. I really can't recall those 2 tapes/soundbox for listening to old Bushy laughing. What a fab bit of kit that was and I assume it came in the little box tucked into one side of the packaging shown in the pic below.

I do rememner those boffins pictured on the top of the box - the Corgi Technocrats?

Looking up the year of manufacture, 1971, I would have been 10. I can't decide if that was too old for a Basil Brush Corgi car. Did you have one readers?
