GORDY INTERNATIONAL: RIFLE RACK

I like these Sharpshooters plastic toy weapons I saw on an old auction. A typical rack toy from America's Gordy International, these rifles would have been perfect for GI Joe or other 12 inch action figures like Action Man.

Here's my LP Space Exploring Set #704A. I don't often do searches for LP in fleaBay but when I do it's usually fruitless and I end up getting bupkis so I was lucky to have latched on to this some years back.

From left to right: Matchbox mack Auxillary Power Truck 1991, Days Gone Preston and son of Potto [no date], Matchbox K-13/20 DAF Truck 1971, Lledo 1935 Blue Bird [no date], Brown Hot Wheels '70 Dodge Daytona 2003, Yellow Hot Wheels Beetle Robo Zoo 1988, Blue Hot Wheels La Troca 2000 and finally, and for me the most interesting, a Disney World Wild Racers Jafar from 2001.

SNAP-A-ROOS HARBOUR FLEET

I first knew about Snap-a-roos when I bought reference books on model kits.

I didn't have one as a kid. I do like the idea of snap-together miniature kits though.

This is the Harbour fleet by Aurora.

Looks like there were four craft in the kit.

This boxed set appeared ages ago on Worthpoint.

MYSTERY BLUE ANTENNA CAR

Its been bugging me ever since. What is it?

I get the antenna but what's the vehicle meant to be?

I've flipped it upside down on the right for a different view.

SPUTNIK, KAPUTNIK ? NIET!

Well it took a while, but last night I finally had a chance to see the latest russian sci-fi 'Sputnik'. Billed as 'the russian Alien', the similarities are obvious as the story revolves around a spaceman encountering something unpleasant in orbit. Set in 1983, it captures the cold war paranoia well, using what appears to be real soviet era architechture and locations. The film is in russian, with english subtitles, so following the action can be a little awkward at times, especially as the film has cyrillic titles on screen from time to time to indicate place names etc.

The characterisations and acting are excellent, with the three main roles of evil base commander, beleagured cosmonaut and renegade psychologist are handled extremely well. The space scenes are very reminiscent of the epic 'Salyut 7' and the eponymous creature (Sputnik means Traveller in russian) is very well done.If I had to level a complaint about the film at all, my only gripe would be the sound effects for the alien, which consist of wet gurgly noises like a dog eating a blancmange.

As far as the creature is concerned, there are major parallels with the Alien franchise, but the central tenet is subtly different. I don't want to add any spoilers and would encourage anyone with a strong stomach and enjoys a good monster romp to watch it.
