Me and the Missus saw Labyrinth on DVD last night. I'm pretty sure I've not seen it before, but it's so old, like me, I can't be sure.
A triumph for Jim Henson's puppetry, I'm not certain it was for David Bowie. I haven't checked Google but being a Bowie fan I was underwhelmed by his performance and the songs he'd written. I found it quite boring. But then again it is a kids film so what do I know!
Jennifer Connelly looks very young so I guess she did OK among all the foam rubber mayhem.
For me, Labyrinth hasn't the power of say, Legend, but I'd be interested to see Dark Crystal, another one I missed and see if fares better.
Did you like Labyrinth readers?
Another one of many films on my "Want List", to see before I croak! SFZ
ReplyDeleteDon't rush with this one SF!
DeleteI'm on the other side. Labyrinth is one of my favorites, and I didn't like Legend at all. So you should probably ignore my opinion of Dark Crystal!
ReplyDeleteHa ha! I'll always give a film a whirl Baron! Dark Crystal is on my 2026 list, along with Krull.
DeleteI love Labyrinth. Jennifer Connelly was great, and I thought David Bowie was perfect as the Goblin King. The best thing he ever did. I would rank it as one of the best films of the 1980s.
ReplyDeleteI like Jennifer C too Paul. She's fab in the Eric Bana HULK movie as General Ross's daughter. She's also in a horror called Phenomena, which I e not seen.
DeleteI first saw The Dark Crystal on a hot afternoon in very late Summer. That seems to be the time of year that I crave seeing it nowadays. But I think it would be good to see during Christmas break.I think it's good for all ages to view, but maybe a few scenes might be a little scary for the youngest kids.
ReplyDeleteYep, it's on the list Brian. A hot crystal might be good. Ha e you seen the Time Bandits?
DeleteI tend to side with you, Woodsy.
ReplyDeleteI think Bowie was dreadfully miscast,
he was just phoning in his performance.
The man could act, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and my vote for best ever, The Man who fell to Earth.
The Missus remembers Bowie in Labyrinth mainly for his codpiece!
Ha ha, Bowie's codpiece! His Jean Jeanie no less! Not sure I've seen the Man Who Fell to Earth. I adored the LP The Man Who Sold the World. I've still got all my teenage Bowie albums up to David Live.
DeleteLegend is a fantastic piece of outrageous fantasy cinema.
ReplyDeleteThe Dark Crystal is a great fantasy puppet movie.
Labyrynth is childish hokum, only saved by very good creature designs and effects.
Yes, Mish, there's something special about Legend and Tim Curry's Darkness is stunning. The goblins are incredibly convincing too!
