I've been in the attic this afternoon now it's warm up there.
It's been years since I looked at my old VHS video collection, so I got them out of their crates and had a look, cleaned them up and formed a plan to put them on shelving. I guess I have around a hundred.
Mostly 1980's big box VHS, there are some clamshells too, along with a group of slipcases. Quite a few are pre-certification. There are a very small number of Betamax. I'm only half way through getting them out.
Do you have any old videos?
Remember these?
Oh my, my history with VHS could make a small book. I bought them starting in 1983, and kept buying them for twenty years! I had over 500 at one point. Now? Maybe a dozen! Although I love the format, I decided it was not worth getting into a storage problem hoarding every tape I owned, especially since most (not all) titles could easily be duplicated via DVD or now, streaming channels. So I sold some, gave some to friends, and took the rest to Goodwill. Now, I have mostly DVDs - and am proud to say I own not one Blu-Ray! I boycott that self-righteous, overpriced format on general principle! If regular DVD ain't good enough for you, you are a fop! SFZ
ReplyDeleteSo which lucky dozen missed the chop SF? And write that book!
DeleteI've got the 3 Star Cops ones as collectables (have the dvd boxset) and one Bleep and Booster one that I've never watched because I don't have a machine! Used to love vhs. I got my first machine in 1980 when it was over £10 for a blank tape!
ReplyDeleteI know Kev, VHS was so dear at the start. No wonder we had to rent them!
DeleteDid someone call for a Fop, Zig?
ReplyDeleteMost of my videos are DVD, but Blu-ray do have some nice extra features to go with the higher price tag.
Talking of video tapes, I had Beta-max (It was the better system!)
My first acquisition was the Alien Home Release, which I got for building a full size rubber costume of the Alien for Fox Video promotions!
Wow, have you still got that Betamax Alien Looey?
DeleteOoh, nice job to get Looey.
ReplyDeleteAh…BETA…the good ole days. Similarly my collection has no BlueRay but have heard some concerns regarding DVDs from Warner Bros. deteriorating (due to some ‘cheaper’ process they used causing the layers to delaminate. Wondering if that’s why some of mine refuse to play (was blaming the kids).
ReplyDeleteIn the UK you can get DVDs for 10p in Charity shops and free T some car boots Charles. Once king of home cinema, they appear to have had their day, booted out by streaming.
DeleteIn the cabinet that houses our entertainment system we still have an old VHS NICAM Video Recorder, fully functional and wired in! And filed alongside the DVD's are about a dozen or more Pre-recorded Video Cassettes. Titles include Doctor Who - The Pyramids of Mars, Star Trek - The Cage, The Motion Picture and First Contact. Mrs Doubtfire, Supercar Volume 1, Thunderbirds 2086 Volume 1, plus a number of other titles.
ReplyDeleteEvery so often we trot them out for a viewing, the last time was about six weeks ago, with the film Mouse Hunt. Considering they are a redundant format, the quality isn't THAT bad. The sound quality is very good, and the video rendering is also clear and certainly doesn't detract from the viewing pleasure. Our Television, although a modern, large screen set, which is Net enabled, does have an impressive array of connections including a SCART socket that does both input and output signals so we could record on video tape too.
I think the last time we did a recording on that machine must have been over fifteen years ago.
Great that you still have VHS sessions Bill and what a superb selection! The Cage, is that the Star Trek pilot?
DeleteSadly I have to admit to having hundreds of VHS tapes from the mid 80's through the 90's. When my daughter was small I recorded many hours of TV shows to one day catch up on. That day has yet to arrive. There are also many commercially made tapes that were gifts.
ReplyDeleteI recorded lots of Saturday morning kids shows, the cartoon ones especially gained by being recorded on KODAK tapes which had the best colour rendition but the worst sound quality.
We still have three VHS players so one day may catch up on those long since ended TV series.
Hundreds of VHS! Amazing! Where do you keep them all Terran? You also illustrated some sleeves didn't you?
DeleteA glimpse inside the attic Batcave. I never had many VHS tapes, as they were expensive, but plenty of blank ones on which to record various TV programmes. A nice stack of vintage treasures.
ReplyDeleteHa ha, the Battic is decidedly crammed Paul but I do plan to make space for shelves for my videos somehow. It's a fun project.
