To commune with the older world, today we hiked 4 miles all told from Keswick town to the prehistoric Castlerigg Stone circle, a site that's 4500 years old!
Like Stonehenge, it's likely to be the oldest man-made place we've ever been to (we've been before. I've been three times at least, the first as a secondary schoolboy on a religious retreat nearby, where I read passages of the Tao Te Ching to the other school kids. I thought I was Kwai Chang Caine! Ha ha!
Words can't really describe this remote place, high up on a grassy plateau encircled by mountains - perhaps primitive. Mystical. Neolithic. Sacred even? - so here are a few shots I took en route and in situ, which hopefully do it some justice.
Have you been readers? Have you been to somewhere ancient?
Nothing as ancient as that in New Zealand. Humans have been here less than a thousand years. An amazing place to visit - and your Gorilla looks right at home.
ReplyDeleteYes, the gorilla was getting into its 2001 Space Odyssey groove Paul. Regarding NZ, are the Maori not older than that?
DeleteMe and the Missus visited Glastonbury Tor back in the 80's. I glanced back at her as we climbed, just as she staggered and said she felt like she was walking through spider webs. Earth Energy? Who knows? Certainly nothing was visible to my eyes.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Oz goes, back in '76, I visited Uluru (Ayers Rock) and while viewing it at night was spooked by it's Ancient energy...
Yes, all these sites have a special aura Looey. Maybe they're all connected!
DeleteThe ancestors of the Maoris only arrived in NZ somewhere around 1200 to 1300 AD, and Europeans a few centuries later. Making NZ the last major land mass to be settled by humans (if you do not count Antarctica).
ReplyDeleteReally. Wow.
DeleteMy home town was begun in 79AD, the same year vesuvius buried Pompeii. I don't think it was cause and effect.
ReplyDeleteLots of old things where you live then!
DeleteI'm one of them!
DeleteHa ha!
Delete"Commune with the Older World," I love that. SFZ
ReplyDeleteIt has that feeling to it SF. Older than most human endeavours.
DeleteLooks like an intriguing day out, Woodsy. Mystical, magical and healthy fresh air. Not many other people about either, by the looks of things.
ReplyDeleteIt was great Tone. I'd like to visit more sites like this. Avebury again, the Tor of course, Silbury Hill, Stonehenge.
DeleteDoes it count that I FEEL that old!? Anywho, I have managed to see the various Roman ruins in and around Trier. The colosseum there was quite a site as of course was the Porta Nigra! Here Stateside, something has to only be a couple of hundred years old for it to be considered 'ancient'. Oh well. Glad to hear you're taking advantage of your retirement!
ReplyDeleteTrier eh Ed! I've been there. A lovely town. Sehr schoen und alt!
DeleteTrier is a lovely Start Ed. Great that you got to see it.
DeleteStadt not start! Auto correct! Doh!
DeleteA gorgeous post, Woodsy and lovely shots. I visited it a few years back, but only took a couple of snaps before the battery ran out on my camera! Bill
ReplyDeleteThanks Bill. It's a fantastic place for sure.
