I've never seen Space Angel but I've always thought that Alex Toth's designs for the show were ahead of their time. They remind me of more adult artwork, what with the shapely tight-fitting suits, the rotund chap's enormous gut, the gorgeous gal and the hunk's the eye patch. It has a sort of French look too, altho' I don't know why.
Toth's ships are wonderful too.
The Starduster is just superbly simple.
As is this gorgeous yellow plane with an array of tanks close by.
There are many fans of Toth's ships online and here's just one, The Land of Nod, who has researched them describes them much better than I can.
Do you like Space Angel?
Those are interesting ships and stations; would make nice miniatures for games. The series is unknown to me.
ReplyDeleteA Sixties cartoon series Scott, one of many designed by Alex Toth. I wonder if anyone has made them into playing pieces?
DeleteI loved the show as a kid. My first foray into scifi. short 5 minute episodes would appear every day on television after school. In recent times, I even made a series of 1:6 scale action figures from the show.
DeleteBob, we have to see those figures! Please send me pics. Email at the bottom of the page, moonbasecentral AT ......
DeleteOn their way 😉
DeleteI remember an animated series of Space Angel that was more or less a static comic strip where the characters had a real moving mouth superimposed over their drawn one.It kind of reminded me of another cartoon called Clutch Cargo.I learned that this form of animation was called Syncro Vox
ReplyDeleteClutch Cargo! i think that got a mention on the blog very early on. I'll have to check. Synchro Vox, what a great name Brian!
DeleteAh, Space Angel! Weirdest cartoon on TV! Those human mouths were creepy! Never knew the designs were by Toth, but it makes sense. SFZ
ReplyDeleteReally? Human mouths? Blimey SF.
Deletethis was among my favorite cartoons as an older kid - that transition period where the likes of Space Angel and Johnny Quest were more interesting than Bugs Bunny
ReplyDeleteI remember that period Ed! Altho' now I'll watch any cartoons from back then if theyre on TV, which is hardly ever. Roadrunner was a favourite comical one.
