The Missus and me have just watched Jurassic Park Fallen Kingdom.
I was keen to catch up on this franchise we used to love. We got up to 3 in the past.
Fallen Kingdom was Jurassic Pants. The same old tired narrative, dragging grouchy saurians back to the States that we saw in JP The Lost World when it was fresh decades ago. Am I missing something?
And the cynical way that an aging Jeff Goldblum was wheeled out at the beginning and end of the film was just laughable, despite the fact that he said the most interesting lines in the film!
Please don't tell me Spielberg had anything to do with it. Michael Crichton will be turning in his grave.
The next installment is Jurassic Park Fallen Kingdom Dominion. The names are getting longer as the films get worse it seems.
Its on Now TV, which we haven't got and I'm not paying for another channel. Dominion's dino's will just have to wait, no doubt sedated on a ship somewhere near New York.
Have you seen Fallen Kingdom or Dominion readers? What did you think?
You didn't mention 2015's Jurassic World.Did you skip that one or was it another one you didn't care for?
ReplyDeleteNo I think I was OK with JW Brian. It's a while ago since I saw it. Chris Pratt and the ball car. That's the one isn't it.
DeleteI really can't stand Chris Pratt, he's such a naff actor and all that faffing about with the raptors like he's some kind of dino-whisperer is ridiculous. They should have stopped at one. Dragging franchises out like this just weakens the original idea. Having said that, I've just watched the trailer for Alien: Romulus and it looks brilliant! But then I saw Kong and Godzilla, with Kong wearing some kind of stupid armour! Oh dear, looks like the writers strike hasn't helped anyone! Bill
ReplyDeleteI like Chris Pratt as an actor Bill. He's fabulous in Guardians of the Galaxy. It's not the actors I find unexciting, it's the repetitiveness of the screenplays and tropes such as the great hunter. Bob Peck was great as was Pete Postlethwaite, but why more of them. Let's have new characters. Another tedious trope is the nefarious member of the Hammond family constantly popping up to undo everything John Hammond did. Maybe it's just me. Maybe ALIEN and JP should merge!
DeleteLike Shark Movies, there's only so much story you can do with Dinosaurs.
ReplyDeleteSeems to me the 2nd Jurassic Park copied "Gorgo" with the Tyrannosaur mother looking for her baby on the streets of San Francisco.
ha ha! Jurassic Shark Park! I agree Scott about Gorgo but then again I wonder if Crichton [who I assume wrote JPII Lost World] was influenced by that universal childhood nightmare of a T. Rex staring through the bedroom window, which featured prominently in the film, tapping into that primeval angst? I thought it was clever writing but once done its done. No need to repeat it in Fallen Kingdom i thought. Still, new audiences and all that!
DeleteI saw the first two movies - then moved on! Dinosaurs and dino stories are cool but I prefer BBC's Walking with Dino' series. I'm also amazed at just how many new dinosaur fossil finds and identification's have been made the past couple of years. I've seen a ton of them just this past couple of months.
ReplyDeleteYes, I know what you mean Ed. Only recently the biggest land creature ever has been found hasn't it. Staggering and humbling stuff.
