Woodsy,
I’ve decided to take a break from building those “heavy” vintage Japan SF models and tackle something simpler from my childhood.
Before I discovered Japan SF, circa 1968, I built pretty much anything I could get my hands on - planes, cars, monsters, etc. One of the most fun were the 1/32 “antique cars” or “hot rods” released by various manufacturers, including Palmer, Johann, Pyro and Lifelike.
A lot of kids modified these cars for electric slot-car racing, but I always made them as display models.
I found a few of these vintage kits dirt cheap on eBay, and thought I’d give them a try. (It will also be a chance to practice my airbrushing.) If they come out well, I’ll send along pix. Here they are in kit form.

These look great. I look forward to seeing the finished models. I prefer 1/32nd to 1/24th and 1/25th. I only built a couple of 1/32nd scale Airfix cars back in the 1970s, but have done a few more over the last two or three years. The good thing about 1/32nd is the solid, polystyrene tyres, rather than those horrible soft plastic 'rubber' tyres in the larger scale kits.
ReplyDeleteIt is also good to see the range of colours once used for kits, rather than the ultra boring light grey used for almost all kits these days.
I agree, re: scale. All those AMT 1/24 cars never did it for me, but then again, I’m not a car buff per se. I think I always gravitated towards 1/32 because the kits were simpler, and often more unusual (and older) subjects.
DeleteAnd the colored plastic really brings back memories of the glory days! SFZ
PS: I also prefer the solid plastic wheels - so iconic! SFZ
DeleteItll be great to see how you interpret these kits Rob, youre skills should realy make them come alive! Bill
ReplyDeleteHa! We’ll see about that! One reason I want to tackle these is to practice detail painting, and body finishes. Cross your paws! SFZ
DeletePaws crossed Rob! Such vintage models take me right back to that sunny Sixties decade of toys and kits.
ReplyDeleteYes indeedy, two things take me back to the better time - building an old model, and watching a Supermarionation show! SFZ
