Hi Woodsy. My favourite of the large plastic cars has always been the Topper Toys Johnny Speed.
It’s big, battery powered, and came wit a range of accessories. I see that sometimes it is called an E Type Jaguar, but of course it isn’t ! It looks more like a Corvette to me.
Does anyone know what car it was actually based on ?

I knew of Topper’s line of Hot Wheels imitations, Johnny Lightning, but never saw this big beauty! SFZ
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful toy! When first looking at the photos 'Jaguar' came to mind, but yes, it does look like a mash-up between the Jag and a Vette.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing one of these as a prop on a mystery show on the telly as a kid. It was a black and white Roald Dahl type story about a rich kid making fun of another kid who didn't have a father. To show how spoled the first kid was, he was given one of these Topper cars as a present which he didn't appreciate.
ReplyDeleteI'd always thought the car was an E type, but the boat hull rear window is pure early Corvette Stingray!
I've suddenly been reminded I had a novelty transistor radio modelled after an E Type jag, about 12 inches long with a small (fragile) metal screw based attenna. Does that stir any memories?
I'm sure I had this toy as a kid. I always thought it was an E Type Jag Will. Amazing collection!
