Hi
Here's some new images from my archives
Four images....
The first one....my first venture with Masters of the Universe....the early range shooting some images for Mattel ....just starting out with "Toy Photography in 1987".....learning what to do and not to do in those days....the direction my work would take then into now has been an adventure , a roller coaster career across the Toy Industry , Children's Comics , Advertising Photography and now into Films , TV and the Games Industry.....
Second image.....a self picture , with the "Bratz"....this miniature set built for a poster shoot on "BRATZ DO HALLOWEEN" , created for TITAN BOOKS publishing in the UK and MGA TOYS USA.....The haunted house set built on a five foot square model stage at my studio in Lancashire , England in the "2000's....
Third Image....."Bratz Treasures"....the Pirate Girls together...a small model set for this one....again a studio picture with artwork background.....also for Titan Publishing in England with the support of MGA Toys USA .
Finally image four...."Bratz Sports Range".....This was an interesting one ....the background is a real life image of a "Blackpool Sports Arena running track......I created a 30x20 colour print in my darkroom and mounted it on a board .
The model foreground set was built and the two were merged...."three red heads lighting used on this with balanced daylight filters to get the natural light look"......

The sports arena one works very well Richard. Good choice of angle on the photo background.
ReplyDeleteThanks Wish.....appreciate your comments....the outside shoot at the arena , I used a large tripod and mama 67RZ camera....spent around a couple of hours at the track trying various positions...the shot shown here did work out well when I came to do the studio set up with the figures....Regards Richard Dixon TPD STUDIOS UK .
ReplyDeleteGreat to see your commercial archive and how it was done Richard. You've worked on some of the biggest names in toys and you don't get much bigger than He Man. What was it like working on that line with Mattel?
ReplyDeleteIt was great.....Mattel was a fantastic Company to work with back then....superb creative support with what I wanted to do with the product...they were with me all the way....the person who got me into He Man on that gig was Toontastic Comics Head of Production / Editor James Hill...he had followed my work with Hasbro and Marvel Comics / Panini Comics / Pedigree Books / Kenner Toys / Bluebird etc....always wanted me on board but was not able to steer me his way.....he finally got me interested and I completed a very successful set of images for Masters of the Universe....first time I put photography , model set design and artwork together in merged final images....it was very well received with finished results that I was most proud of at the time....I had up to that time done artwork for some "toy images"...but only as a support to my photography....doing art at school and later on college courses....had not considered art as a career choice though...but now today with my own publishing work its beginning to be used by myself...many years later .....appreciate you showing some of my earlier work Paul to your followers on here....its nice that people can see these images so many years on from when they were created...Best Regards Richard Dixon / TPD STUDIOS - Lancashire , England .
ReplyDeleteAs a little footnote Paul to your earlier comment of "working with the biggest names in Toys"....its very true...I have certainly been very lucky in that respect....thirty - six years advertising toys with most of the biggest Companies....the leading products...probably the number of those tops well over a hundred top brands....many passing by alongside each other as they made their way to the photo stages in my studios in Blackpool and Preston over those years....met a lot of people and characters...," celebs " as well along the way.....time seemed to stand still a lot....as it was a busy career journey in everyday.....its also kept me young at heart I still love the business and always will....I will keep you posted on the next steps in my journey....Best Regards Richard Dixon .
