Over Christmas I realised, again, that I've never seen three key films of 1980's fantasy: The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and Willow.
I've seen a lot of fantasy films like Legend, Time Bandits, The Neverending Story to name a few, but the above three have somehow passed me by.
Have you seen them readers?
I have seen Labyrinth, which is excellent. I am surprised you have not seen that one, given that David Bowie has a major role in the film, as the Goblin King. I think I have also seen The Dark Crystal, which was by Muppets creator Jim Henson.
ReplyDeleteI was a Bowie nut as a kid but I'm unsure if he can act? What do you think Paul?
DeleteLabyrinth is a bit slow and feeds of the Dark Crystal vibe, but ultimately just looks like a weird music video. Dark Crystal is basically nasty muppets, but as designed by Brian Froud. Its an interesting idea and spawned a recent series on Netflix, but as I hate muppets, its not something I could watch today. Willow is the fantasy output from the Star Wars fold. All the usual tropes, feisty female, brash warrior, wizards, dragons, elves and the hero dwarf Willow. Again its spawned a tv series on Disney Plus recently. Great if you like high fantasy, but looking dated now.
ReplyDeleteYou hate muppets? Isn't Yoda one?
