As the Orion spacecraft is now safely on its way to the Moon, I took this photo of its namesake in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey in three different kit versions - Airfix, Aurora and Marusan.
Have a great flight!

Anyone else got these kits?
I remember having and making the Airfix kit version as a kid, Arto. A great selection of Orion with some very cool box art.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tony, the Airfix kit must have been fun to have and build. Had you seen the movie by then?
DeleteVery nice set, Arto, of course I'd much prefer to see them built! ; D
ReplyDeleteAfter me trying it Scoop, you wouldn't!
ReplyDeleteI had and loved both the Aurora and the Airfix kit. The Orion was the coolest fictional space ship model kit out in the late 1960s, right before all the Japanese Supermarionation and Sci-Fi kits hit the marketplace, and then it was all over for me!
ReplyDeleteBellfine collectables have some ready made 2001 vehicles including the Orion.
ReplyDeleteI had the Airfix Orion kit. I also made a balsa wood version during my craft class at Junior School. Unfortunately, I was passing a puddle as I brought it home and I thought it would be a good idea to simulate a splash down...
ReplyDeleteMy carefully smoothed and sanded surfaces instantly swelled back up to a rough woodgrain finish!
Beautiful trio of Orions Arto! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI have both the Airfix and Aurora kits, plus a couple of spares which one day I'll build as NASA or British Airways versions. There's a new 1/72 scale kit by Moebius which sells for about £170. Works out pretty large! https://files.ekmcdn.com/bbe1ec/images/2001-space-clipper-large-1-72-scale-model-kit-moebius-models-3895-p.jpg?v=116E3249-B22A-4EE0-B555-3B2B1340000B
ReplyDeleteThat's one of my favorite space ships, from one of my favorite scenes in one of my favorite movies.
ReplyDeleteI've used the Orion III a few times as an orbital transport in my comic strip. (Though, I had it carried to altitude and dropped by a large airliner sized plane.)
I'd love to get the 1/72nd scale model, but I just wouldn't have room for it.
