In this week's mail-bag I received two Halloween ghost-cards from readers Brian and Paul.
Brian: I spotted a bag of Satellite Candy, which I only just learned about thanks to Moonbase Central. Did I buy them?NO, but I did buy something that will make its way on the menu Halloween Night. Halloween Pasta! Its a bag of pasta shaped like bats, Jack o lanterns and I think there's ghosts in there.
I think I will dress them with diced Pancetta, chopped yellow tomatoes or orange peppers and sliced black olives. I will finish it off with a little truffle oil and grated Romano cheese. Since you are curious about what I cook on holidays, I hope that does the trick for you!

What will you be eating on Halloween night?
Paul: Hi Woodsy,
I was looking at the Halloween decorations in various shops at the weekend. Alongside the skulls and skeletons, spiders, and tombstones, were some mini plastic chainsaws.
I assume these were inspired by the notorious 1970s horror movie The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
That had an R Rating in America (those under 17 admitted only with an accompanying adult), but it was banned in Britain until 1999, when it was finally released with an 18 Certificate (no one under 18 admitted). It had previously been shown in London, with a local X Certificate, in the 1970s (again, no one under 18 admitted).
My question is, are small plastic chainsaws part of the Halloween decorations in Britain - commemorating a film that was banned there for over two decades ?

What cool and grisly Halloween items are in your shops readers?
Hope theres lots of garlic and at least a little chilli in that pasta Brian.
ReplyDeleteThese are both excellent suggestions,Mish.I think a little garlic and a pinch of diavolici will taste great and keep vampires at bay. Thanks!
DeleteCould the chainsaw be a reference to the Evil Dead films instead? With all it's ghosts and ghouls, it's more Halloween friendly than a movie about a serial killer...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lewis. I had not thought of the Evil Dead films - the first one was on the British Video Nasty list, and was also banned.
ReplyDeleteI can see the pasta dish now Brian, steaming in the darkness of your den, the only light, a flickering black candle upon which a month perishes and falls into your sauce. Suddenly the flame expires as something or someone behind you blows it out. Saliva spots your shoulder and it is only then that you realise too late: you've forgotten the garlic!
ReplyDeleteVery nice bit of creative writing,Woodsy, although moths and drool kind of took the edge off my appetite,ha ha
