I was intrigued by D.C.'s comment on my previous post about the look of the AMT Exploration Set so I checked online myself to see if I could find what a built example looked like. Here's the result ( credit to the original photographers)
To be honest, I actually quite like the look of these, in spite of their diminished size.
They have a certain something. None of those kits were as accurate as they could've been. I built the Galileo a while back and I had to change so much of it! Still, they were what we had! I suppose the Enterprise counts as accurate since they used the models in the show sometimes, I believe!
ReplyDeleteThere's certainly something nostalgic about them, Kev.
DeleteI've got the AMT Galileo and apart from some minor detailing at the rear I'm happy to leave it as it is as it reminds me of the old TV21 comic strip depictions. I'm currently building the far more accurate modern Polar Lights kit at the moment.
You're right about the old AMT Enterprise. It appears in the The Doomsday Machine.
I think these models look ace. How do they compare to vintage toy versions I wonder?
ReplyDeleteI am building the AMT USS Enterprise Bridge kit at the moment, although mine is a later edition, with a fully enclosed bridge, and six figures rather than three, as in the original 1970s version. The main problem is the lack of location pins or tabs - the model is almost all butt joins, which does not make it very strong. The painting instructions are also not very good, but it does contain a beautiful decal sheet for all the screens and controls. This is my first Star Trek model.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear you're tackling the kit, Paul, this updated version does sound improved over the original. It's not a kit I had at the time, but another I'm tempted at picking up at some point.
DeleteSeems ideal for lighting and sound effects!
DeleteThat's a really great shot of the assembled versions.
DeleteThanks for sharing it.
I was surprised to learn that the image of Balok on the Tricorder screen was, indeed, supplied with the kit!
And these do have a charm about them.
At the time, though, I wanted screen-accurate, full size replicas...
D.C.
The Balok image is a nice touch, thanks for pointing that out, DC.
DeleteSpock and the Snake is the one I want - accuracy be damned!
ReplyDeleteThat's a kit I had as a youngster, made a right mess of painting it!:D
