I can hear the tinkling music of the Ice Cream van outside. It's a reminder that its summer in the UK.
Its such a nostalgic sound the ice cream van, like a sweet bell ringing from our childhood. Ice Cream vans were a constant feature of our streets in the Sixties and Seventies.
With memorable names like Mister Softee and Mister Whippee, getting an ice cream from the side of the van was a real delight.
The ice cream was soft and piped into a sort of pyramid on a cone or in a tub. The finishing touches were just the best: chopped nuts, sprinkles and a swirl of delicious sauce. My favourite was raspberry. What was yours?
For something different I sometimes asked for an oyster, a nougat wafer or a screwball. Remember them?
Sometimes my Mum asked me to take a large bowl to the van and get it filled for a Sunday dinner dessert. Great fun!
What are your ice cream memories readers?
Generally I liked lollies, such as a Fab, a Zoom, or a Cornish Mivi, but, if a cone, then a '99' with a Cadbury's Flake and, like you, raspberry sauce.
ReplyDeleteI liked all of those lollies too Mish. i could never tell the difference between a Mivi and a Split.
DeleteOutside our school during the summer term was Steve's Ice Cream van. An independent owner/operator his best selling item to us 4th/5th Formers was a Shandy Lollipop.
ReplyDeleteThe ratio of beer to lemonade was 99% to 1%.
By the 6th Form we escaped to nearby pubs!
Mmm, I loved Shandy lollies as well Terran! I also loved those apple juice lollies and the pure orange juice lollies too.
Delete🎵 Diddley Diddley Doo,
ReplyDeleteDoo Didoo Didoo Didoo Doo !
That was our ice cream van's tune !
I like it Mish, I can hear it now. One of the van tunes that's stuck in my head is the one in the film The day of the Triffids, where the van drives slowly through the terror plants with its music blaring through the top speaker!
DeleteUsed to love the Screwballs as you could use the container as a Dalek.
ReplyDeleteYes! I remember that too Dave! The chewing gum at the bottom was always the hidden treasure in screwballs! I wonder why they never formalised the link with Daleks and made more dosh?
