Here's a strange carded set. Its from Imperial, the folks who gave us Apollo Moon Exploring sets.
The card art looks like the 1979 film and the bottom illustration looks like an animated version - was there one?
Is that Ming in the circular photograph?
But the toy figure looks ancient - from the original TV series - maybe Wilma?
I assume this is a knockoff.
Any thoughts readers?
Interesting. The top illustration shows Buck Rogers, Wilma Deering, and the robot Twiki from the TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979-81). The pilot was released as a movie in some markets.
ReplyDeleteThe character in the circular photo is Tiger Man - Ming the Merciless was from Flash Gordon, not Buck Rogers.
Not sure about the lower illustration.
The figure itself looks as though it is based on a very early Wilma Deering design. More like the 1930s than the 1970s. The card and the silver object both carry the copyright date 1979.
Thanks for your insights Paul. Tiger Man eh! I'm glad I got Wilma right.
DeleteThe painted art and line drawing version (maybe filched from a colouring book?) Are from the 80's TV show. So is the bald bloke who is Tiger Man, who was the main muscle in the telemovie vetsion.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure who the female figure is, it could be Wilma Deering's body, but she never wore headgear like that unless it's a very off-model space helmet!
Thanks Looey. I just don't recall that 80's TV show at all.
DeleteThe figure IS based on the 1979 show but is the wrong color and the details of the helmet are a bit "off". Here's a picture of Erin Grey (Wilma Deering) for comparison.

Thanks Captain, I see what you mean. Dseeing Wilma's helmet on that site reminded me that I once found a boxed Buck Rogers helmet set at a car boot sale! It was a brilliant catch and one of the first collectables I ever found. Happy days
DeleteImperial did a bunch of these, I have a similarly carded gorilla soldier from PotA and there were superheroes and others. The line drawing has been taken from the photo above it!
