Apart from the Ghost Story for Christmas on Christmas Eve and Alistair Sim's Christmas Carol a little earlier that week, I thought the 'normal' telly schedules were rubbish over Christmas this year in England. Some days on Freeview you wouldn't have known it was Christmas!
I dunno - like the big Sixties kid I am - I wanted Jason and the Argonauts, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad or any Harryhausen, lots of Laurel and Hardy, lots of 1950's B-movies like Them! some Thunderbirds [from the Sixties] and maybe a whole haunting of ghost stories.
Having said that we were out a lot so it may have been just our bad luck to miss all of the above if they were on!
This year was the first one we didn't invest in a Christmas Radio Times. Maybe that had something to do with it!
What do you think readers? What's Xmas TV like were you are in the world?
There was nothing at all that I was keen to see but there isn't most of the year to be honest. The things I like I have on dvd. There are some modern dramas that I like but not a lot.
ReplyDeleteIts coming to something when all we can watch is DVD's and streaming Kev. What on earth has happened? I thought the digital revolution would be good. Its all dross! Clear 'em all out except for the first four TV channels and leave it that!
DeleteYep, Xmas telly was more of the same (for the rest of the year) just a little more money thrown at it. A few good films that I had already seen, so nothing, really!
ReplyDeleteBlimey, its a sad state of affairs Andy!
DeleteActually Woodsy there was quite a lot of traditional Christmas TV stuff on this year, including 'Jason and the Argonauts', which I caught a bit of by accident.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is that there are so many channels and options now that you really have to pre-plan your viewing schedule to be aware of it.
Also, some supposedly festive fun, like the new version of 'Around the World in 80 Days' turn out not to be entertaining romps, but reworked, preachy pieces, with harrowing back stories, telling you why a lot what you liked about the original is no longer appropriate !
Jason and the Argonauts! Bugger! I really must get the Radio or TV Times next year and start ringing what we want to see I agree!
DeleteYeah lots was on. For Harryhausen lovers, Jason and the Argonauts was on, as was The 7th voyage of Sinbad and One Million Years BC.
ReplyDeleteThunderbirds Are Go (1966) for Zero-X addicts and Daleks' Invasion Earth:2150 (also 1966) for Whovians. Plenty of other stuff aswell....
Oh yeah belated happy xmas, happy new year etc....
7th Voyage! Really Toad! So everything I mentioned in my opening gambit was actually on! ha ha. I really must get a Radio Times next year and stop moaning!
