We've seen this Petrel set before [top right] but I thought I'd blog it again as its unusual. I know nothing about Petrel.
The old Vectis auction pictures aren't too great. Its hard to make out exactly what's in each compartment.
Anyone know what the yellow object is and the orange craft below it with the star sticker?

RESULT!
As soon as Arto mentioned wheels it rang a bell and here we have it. I think the orange vehicle is the friction powered Missile Car, seen below in blue and boxed as featured here on MC in 2014! Make still unknown.
Further observations:
Top right I now think that the yellow object is a plastic dingy or lifeboat like this [playmobil, as an example]
and maybe some figures are frogmen or are they simply LP spacemen on their side? What do you think?
Top left I can just about see a black vehicle, possible a jet or a missile. Can you?
I do not know this set, but the star sticker is the national insignia used on US aircraft. White bars were added each side of the star in 1943, and a red stripe in the centre of the bars (matching the US flag) in 1947.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that Paul. The orange vehicle almost looks like a small submersible.
DeleteAren't those wheels at the back, as the vehicle seems to lay on its side? Just look at the photo upside down for a better angle.
ReplyDeleteYes! That has given me a clue Arto! Thanks! Check the post now!
DeleteI'm wondering if the black plane like thingy top left is an X15 jet? I checked here but couldn't see one that's small and plastic http://www.mach25media.com/toys.html
DeleteThe Starcruiser Mission Kit might have been of interest to me at one point, but I've heard its quite fragile and not that durable.
ReplyDeleteYep I always liked this Kit since first seeing it online Scoop. I wonder if it sold well and how popular Starcruiser was in general having remained a non-TV concept of C21? The Mission Kit idea would have worked for Project SWORD as well I reckon.
DeleteI can't say whether it sold well or not, Woodsy. I imagine it was a bit obscure to most kids, unless they were avid Look-in readers. The kit seemed to do okay, and even had a larger 'interceptor' kit to go with it. As you'll probably know, Dinky were going to do a die cast Starcruiser as well, but decided against it, and split up a couple of the components to sell as separate space vehicles.
DeleteYes, I quite like the Dinky space vehicles Scoop. An unusual range. I particularly like the Space Battle Cruiser.
DeleteYes, I liked the Battle Cruiser too, Woodsy. I reckoned it looked better than the detachable one on the actual Airfix Starcruiser. I never had the Dinky one, but they did seem to turn up an Dinky Marts all the time.
DeleteThere's some talk of the Battle Cruiser having parts that were meant for a planned Sky 1 Scoop. Have you heard about that?
DeleteNo, that's news to me, Woodsy.
DeleteI knew you would crack it in a sec Woodsy! Well done!
ReplyDeleteOn the Starcruiser Mission Kit, bought mine when Vectis briefly had an online shop along their auction services. It is still sealed so I haven't been able to check the contents.
A sealed Mission Kit! Wow! I wonder who the kid was on the box?
DeleteI think Petrel nicked the name of this set from Blue Box who issued a smaller boxed toy called Secret Missiles Base, the same as the console unit bottom left in the Petrel set.
And here it is Arto, the orange vehicle by Petrel albeit in bits! Alphadrome strikes again! http://alphadrome.net/forums/topic/22161-petrel-toys-saturn-moonbus/
