Reader and space collector Arto has recently won three gorgeously vintage space toys:
- a 4-diorama boxed set Exploring on the Moon,
- Mini Space Toy Series set on card
- Mini Wind-Up boxed Sparking Moon Probe.
They're quite wonderful and Arto has kindly shared pictures of this fabulous bundle. Enjoy!
Well done on some significant wins, Arto. I really like your 'Exploring the Moon' set in particular. The vivid box art, cool design and a well equipped exploration team tick every box for me. I can only imagine the fun kids would have had with this. Stunning condition and a beautiful example!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tony, I absolutely share your enthusiasm. My favourite diorama detail is what looks like a little telly, with a rocket & a satellite on the tv screen.
DeleteThe background art is fabulous in the boxed item, mst of it is lifted from the We Land On The Moon book, that has the original Molab illustration, but I like the way they have even copied Matt Mason on his Reconojet too! the little TV is nice, with a different image to the standard LEM from the Imperial sets. The Lincoln Wind Up moon Rover is brilliant, I have only ever seen the blue versions of it!

ReplyDeleteThanks Wote for giving background for those fabulous illustrations. It must have been fun to compile those miniature moonscapes with small toy parts and printed scenery. There is something special for me just as they are, in their original untouched state.
ReplyDeleteYou've identified the mini wind-up Moon Probe as Lincoln in your previous & thorough Blog posts, although there is no maker's mark. Is it mentioned on some other toy of the same series?
Well Arto, I am assuming they are Lincoln, as I have the tank and bullsozer in Lincoln branded boxes, which have identical chassis. It could be that the moon vehicles are re-boxed or made for models, distributed by another agent.

Ok, thanks for that Wote
DeleteWow wow wow, what an amazing haul!
ReplyDeleteExploring on the Moon is one of those glorious generic off-brand products that were ubiquitous back in the day, and now look like ancient treasure from a lost civilization. So many cool designs in this marvelous set, a kid would not know where to begin - and collectible box art to boot.
Mini Space Toys is legend just for the chrome Apollo capsules, with red tips, an excellent permutation of “the real thing.”
Sparking Moon Probe is one of the classic SF vehicle templates, the “Space Tank,” and every kid’s dream back then, during the glory days of the Space Age.
Insanely jealous of this booty!
Thank you so much Zigg. I have a soft spot the size of the Great Red Spot of Jupiter for dioramas like Exploring on the Moon. There is a challenge there because they are pretty scarce, more often than not in a rough shape, and even when in good shape the little parts have become loose and scattered inside. So there's a bit of guesswork replacing them based on ancient brown glue marks!
