I just came across this short video on You Tube, from the Junkman, on 1976 King Kong Merchandise. Included are the board game you recently mentioned, a target game, cups and plates, metal lunch-box, a couple of model kits, a playset, View-Master reel, an amazing King Kong drinking straw, and even a Bop Bag (thanks to you, I now know what this strange item is). Some of it is a bit bizarre, but all great fun.

Also, from the Mego Museum, is a page on various King Kong toys. According to this, only one of the Kong kits was actually produced. The Kong battling a giant snake was not released, even though it features in a TV ad, which is included in the Junkman video.

I would have loved a chance at that Kong vs. Snake kit. I am collecting any toys I can find depicting creatures(besides Kong)from Skull Island/Hollow Earth, from any of the Kong movies. My eventual goal is to do a photo shoot with all of these creatures together.Toys from the '76 movie are pretty hard to find. Hopefully some toy company will obtain the license(Super 7?How about it?)and give me what I need.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great and monstrous project Brian! Keep us posted with your progress. I remember a Hollow Earth figure in the Colourforms Outerspace Men line too. Cool stuff. I also love the film Journey to the Centre of the Earth from the 60's. Is that Hollow earth too?
DeleteYou will be the first to see the finished project for sure. The Hollow Earth I'm referring to is the one featured in Godzilla vs. Kong 2021,Although creatures from Journey to the Centre of the Earth in toy form would be great!
ReplyDeleteWhen I'd emigrated to Australia as an early teen, I discovered a place called Reverse Garbage Truck. It was a community run warehouse that took industrial waste and recycled it for hobby purposes. It was full of unused shampoo bottles, plastic off cuts and things like surplus point of sale displays.
ReplyDeleteIt regularly featured plastic mouldings from a local company called Toltoys. They had an affiliation with Kenner toys and I recall pieces of Ewok village components. There was also a barrel of tan coloured plastic bits that if you scraped through enough, you could build two tall thin skyscrapers and a two piece Kong to stand atop them.
Does that strike any memories with you, readers?
How amazing Looey, a Toltoys recycling point! Have you still got any Ewok village bits? We have a similar centre in Leeds called the Scrapstore but I don't think there are any toy parts. I've looked! I bet there are a whole warehouse of undiscovered vintage toy parts somewhere!
