On Father's Day here in the UK I had the pleasure of joining my Daughter and my Grandson at his first car boot sale in Leeds.
Needless to say we went mad and had a ball. It was die-cast heaven, never mind any other toys there.
Junior snaffled a lovely big Imaginext plastic Batmobile and a sleek Hot Wheels Batmobile with his pennies and I got him a beautiful Superkings Auto Transport from the 70's - did you have one? - for a fiver and a really cool modern Iron Man motorbike, which goes like the clappers.
I got myself some toy cars as well from a really well-stocked elderly chap. Pics to follow.
Do you like Matchbox Superkings?
I'm not sure if I had any Superkings, my brother may have had one or two. I remember when low friction wheels started appearing (Superfast, Speedwheels, Whizzwheels), but I hated them. They looked nothing like the 'proper' old style wheels. On carpet they didnt go much farther than the old style ones, and we wern't allowed to play on the kitchen lino. So the yellow Matchbox Kingsize K8 Guy Warrior Transporter that I had would have been much preferred by me back then over the Speedking version. Now that I'm a little bit older I could happily have both versions.
ReplyDeleteI remember that Kingsize Guy warrior Timmy. Very nice. I come across Kingsize and Super Kings at car boots, which is always great to see.
DeleteI love that car transporter, the front cab was so reminiscent of Gerry Anderson and Spacex. There were a number of similar style models released about the same time - 1975 - a fire engine, crane, breakdown truck etc. A classic period in Matchbox styling. Nowadays, since they were bought out by Mattel, Matchbox cars are amongst the most banal stylings available.
ReplyDeleteYep, Wote, those Gerry Andersonesque vehicles are wonderful. Its a pity that space age design didn't rub off on modern car makers. The real ones. They all look the same boring rounded efforts.
