Well, its Friday night and work is done for this week. I'm kicking back with a lager and blackcurrant and looking forward to a film night with Blue the Moonbase Mutt.
I've had a break from horror and sci-fi lately and seen a few thrillers, which were:
The Maus - an interesting take on the Balkans war of the Nineties. It uses a deep forest to ramp up the dread and malice that a post-war couple feel when faced with seemingly belligerent strangers. Ultimately, I didn't like it.
The Irishman - a Scorsese marathon of 3.5 hours. if you like Goodfella or the Godfather you should enjoy this mob epic. I'm curiously drawn to the brash world of American Italian gangsters battling it out in the clubs and yards of the States. Exceptional De Niro -Pesci- Pacino triple act, which I loved.
Casino - another mobster maelstrom at 2.5 hours, this time on the Las Vegas strip, as De Niro tries to become the legit King of the city, whilst his best buddy Pesci is busy punching and kicking everyone he meets. A sort of alternate universe sequel to Goodfellas set in the Seventies and Eighties. Again, I loved it.
The Vanished - a thriller starring The Punisher himself, Thomas Jane. It is a punishing movie too as it deals with the immediate aftermath after a child goes missing at a caravan park in America. A strange flick, which I sort of enjoyed.
Do you like any of these? What have you seen lately readers?
My Missus wanted to give Penny Dreadful a try.
ReplyDeleteBeing very familiar with Alan Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the concept of taking out of copyright characters and telling new stories with them is not new, it all comes down to how good the stories are.
Surprisingly PD is actually at it's best when it fleshes out it's original characters rather than simply reinventing Dr. Frankenstein and Professor Van Helsing.
Eva Green and Timothy Dalton are great and there oddly, too many James Bond connections to list here!
After watching Season 1, we decided to buy the full series on DVD.
Never seen any Penny Dreadful Looey. Not sure I can get it with the channels I have. When are you watching the DVDs, all weekend?
ReplyDeleteOne episode a night is more than enough, it's strong stuff.
DeleteI can't get my head around this "binge" mentality, we would get desensitised watching too much of this in one hit!
I hadn't realised PD was strong. I thought it was for kids!
ReplyDeletePenny Dreadful is one of my faves too. Eva Green makes a terrific performance. Still have the 3rd season to watch.
