Here is another “Super Fantastic” model from Japan. It’s something called a Skull Baggy, from a 1982 Japanese anime program called Gyakuten! Ippatsuman. Pretty unusual, yes?
I look at this and think of the vehicles from LJN's Dune toy line.I wonder if there is a connection.Perhaps this vehicle might have been an influence on the design of the Spice Harvesting vehicles?
I think the comparison is interesting, and the timing would be right, but what if the Japanese anime people stole the idea of the bubble wheels from something even earlier? I vaguely recall an early NASA moon rover concept vehicle having giant ball-like wheels, to cover irregular terrain.
Yes, I see that too Brian. For some reason Zigg I thought of the Tome Machine in the 60's movie. It must be the big bulbous lever reminding me of the wheels https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/GccC3ICwsPCwDvmega19Ubz03PzoqdZfGJAn7tiEuw0Nilehc9xYSfg6SRYXjs3umqy7lNi4NfigY29CK1JiFhCZKXaXRIC7qg4VeFJuyWGn6gI-naHmVR3XaAasjQFW1UDzxw I also thought of a Thunderbirds model that Brains makes in the flick TB6 https://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RsCCizsWvNw/TI6yOzFordI/AAAAAAAAKjA/GL93KEzPtJg/s1600/sept+2010+divers+tb+6+big+fire+012.JPG Great model Zigg and really well painted!
Thanks Woodsy, this was a bear to paint, but I wanted to follow the instructions on the color scheme as close as possible. And do you know, I don’t think I have ever seen Thunderbird 6!
This was the 6th series of the Time Bokan franchise. The Skull Buggy model you have there is the main vehicle of the bad guys, the Skull Lease. The good guys are the Time Lease. To match the power of the Time mecha, the Skull is combined with various other mecha as the cockpit. The Skull Lease must be filthy rich as each episode their mecha is destroyed in a skull shaped explosion.
Here's the opening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bepiyG3lvY
Several things carried over through all 24 series. Bad guys had a skull shaped command pod, always exploded in a skull headed cloud, always 3 bad guys thin guy with odd nose, squat muscle guy, sexy woman leader whose clothes get ripped on defeat, good guys featuring a whole boy, cute girl usually in love with the hero, robot sidekick, one super power hero mech who rarely has trouble beating the bad guys ineptness.
Time Bokan was a great show and was shown here in Houston on one of the spanish channels as La Maquina del Tiempo on 16mm film that included arabic sub titles on a few episodes. You may have seen Time Bokan under the English name Time Fighters. Two "movies" made it out on vhs in the states, Time Fighters, and Time Fighters in the Land of Fantasy. They are just edited together episodes but entertaining. Openings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3RfUmywBik https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmAUs4FPL_8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xznhQimXCs
I'm sure there's more info I overlooked but it's what I could remember off the top of my head.
You really know your Japanese shows Lance. I've never heard of Time Bokan. Amazing.I watched the clips. they really remind me of Marine Boy somehow, a cartoon that I did see as a kid in the UK and one I loved. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Lance.
Blimey, wierd or what ?
ReplyDeleteIt looks more late '60s than early '80s to me. Like something from The Banana Splits or Motormouse and Autocat.
Agreed! It looks like something that Penelope Pitstop should be driving in The Wacky Races!
DeleteWhat a wonderful Lawn Roller. I can picture it now rolling over the pitch at Lords prior to the last test match for The Ashes.
ReplyDeleteI know, the pumpkin wheels really get me, as well as the chopper-like forked front wheel. Its a cultural mutation like only the Japanese can do.
DeleteSquashed American Football helmet ?
ReplyDeleteThere is definitely the idea of a “hat” in that weird chassis, I agree!
