My missus can recall stuff when she was 4 or even earlier! Like sat in a playpen! I can't remember anywhere near as far back. In fact I would say any early memories I may have had are now just memories of memories!
How far back can you remember readers?
Probably 4 or thereabouts. I can remember things taking place in a house that I know I was 5 when we left.
ReplyDeleteI was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, and I can remember feeding the ducks down by a river - I assume the Avon - when I was really little, although I do not know what age I would have been. Ducks, Weeping Willow trees, and a river, that is about it for Christchurch. After that we moved about a bit, before finally settling in Auckland, where I grew up.
ReplyDeleteI have loads. Probably the earliest was when I got Gastroenteritis! I was around 9 months old! Honestly... I confirmed this with my mother too. I was rolling around in agonising stomach pain in my pram. I ended up forcing my knitted bonnet over one of my eyes. I remember looking up with the wool over one eye, to see the concerned look on Mothers face.
ReplyDeleteShe told me that we had just been to the doctors, and he said that there was not a lot he could do. So it was back home, and my Granmother sorted it out!
HMS Daedalus Petty Officer's Mess '71/72 - I'm 18 months old and (probably) sitting on my Mum's lap , the room is filled with the sounds of beer glasses clinking , laughter , and a Hammond organ. RN issue cigarette smoke wafts through the air and I feel happy and secure.

What a fabulous image. Wasn’t Daedelus an assault ship, carrying landing craft?
DeleteNo mate it was a Fleet Air Arm Naval Air Station at Lee On Solent near Gosport Hampshire - at that time it would have been home to squadrons of Wessex helicopters and also the RN Hovercraft Trials Unit (I believe the Hovercraft Museum is now based there and I think they might still fire 'em up on high days and holidays ?)

Falling down a flight of stairs when I was 3 and getting the letter to say I could start school before I was 5! Vividly recall jumping up and down on an armchair while my mum read the letter
ReplyDeleteOddly vague. Difficult to put dates on things. I can remember going to pre-school and then Infant's school. I remember seeing one of the Aldermaston Marches (Ban the Bomb) my father took photos of Vanessa Redgrave and Tariq Ali at one of them. I remember my parents buying their first B&W telly, but I would have been 8 or 9 by then...
ReplyDeleteFabulous memories guys! I'm amazed how far you can all go back. I must have a mental block or else I'm going senile!
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Woodsy said at the beginning - are early childhood memories primary memories, or second-hand memories filtered through later childhood contemplation? For years I’ve been keeping a running log of memories and notable events from my childhood and young adolescence (for a proposed writing project which will never happen), and I was surprised to find memories back to about 1956, my second year. That memory was of falling in love with Miss Francis on TV’s Ding Dong School, and thinking she was another mother! Francis Horwich, my first crush!
ReplyDeleteFancy being called Horwich Zigg. Its a little village/town in Lancashire and I used to go swimming there in the early Seventies with my Brother in Law Terry. he swam, I messed around! Thanks for the memory Francis Horwich! PS. get that writing project started!
