Been enjoying ET with Junior this aft. He's only 4 so he could only manage a bit of it but seemed to like what he saw. Somehow those Eighties kids movies seem to capture something that we want back. Take Stranger Things for instance. Pure nostalgia for the Eighties.
Did you watch ET with your children in the Eighties? Our daughter loved it. We collected loads of toys for her. Some are still in the attic dreaming of going home.
Did you like ET?
Ive never seen it all the way through. Cant say I was much of a fan back in the day, probably due to the media storm that surrounded it, which for the 80’s was intense. For me, Close Encounters some years earlier was much better and closer to the mark, ET was far too cutesy and sloppy, aimed at a market which loves happy endings. Super 8 delivers the 80’s vibe and the early teen coming of age vibe wonderfully, with a spectacular combination of CE3K and disaster movie thrills. It also provides one of the best screen aliens ever, even if it isnt clearly seen. You can see Spielberg all over it and whilst I wouldn’t show this, Stranger Things or even ET to a four year old, its a great film.
ReplyDeleteET went down a storm eventually with 4 year old Junior Wote. It was me that was blubbin at the end! I suppose all those 80s movies were aimed at kids Wote and not us sci-fi savvy twenty somethings. Our kids films were in the 60s and seventies.
DeleteI saw it in the theater. it was ok imo, but that was probably because I was not the target audience. I was more into action movies plus had just graduated high school.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion of the film soured when in 2002 Spielberg made changes to the film. And yes, my opinion on the changes Lucas did on Star Wars also soured.
Not sure if me and the grandson saw a changed version Lance. It was a DVD. Certainly when I saw it with my daughter in late Eighties it was the original. I must dog out the toys we have in the loft/
DeleteI was too old for it, when it was released, and didn't have any kids then, but I could tell it was a high quality movie and that it was very popular with children.
ReplyDeleteIts strange. The American kids in it all seem so happy, playing RPG games and eating pizza round a table at home. You should see it Mish.
