I keep finding bundles of old toys in my attic. here's a group of embattled oldtimers, mostly by Airfix.
I think I bought these on Doncaster Keepmoat car boot sale about two years ago, along with a really nice Red Knight of Vienna model. It was packing up time and the seller wanted rid.
Have you oldtimer kits like this? Its not something I would have liked as a kid, I was never into Yesteryear for instance. Don't know why not. Much preferred Whizzwheels and Superfast! I was also never a kit-builder as a kid so Airfix wasn't on my agenda, unless it was their plastic soldiers!
So anyways, here are my beat-up mouldy oldtimers: not in order -
Rolls Royce 1911, Airfix Green Rolls Royce, Airfix Lanchester 1907, Airfix Green Bentley 1930, Airfix Ford Red 1910, Airfix Grey Car and unknown Tank.
I was never into car kits myself, and only ever built a couple of the 1/32nd scale Airfix cars, although years later I did built several larger scale American car kits for a friend who liked cars but was not a modeller. Left to right the models are: 1930 Bentley; 1912 Ford Model T; 1911 Rolls-Royce; 1907 Lanchester; I think the 1923 Morris Cowley; and the 1905 Rolls-Royce. The tank is a 1/76th scale WW2 German Panther without its turret. The only one of these I had was the Bentley.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the ID's Paul. I think the Bentley is the same as Steed's car isn't it?
DeleteI think by and large kids didn't (And probably still don't) appreciate vintage cars as much as modern types that are New and Fast! The only vintage car I really loved as a kid was a Yesteryears Mercer Raceabout in chrome yellow.( I still have it) The only vintage plastic kit I had was a (bargain priced) Pyro MG sports car in crimson red!
ReplyDeletePah! Kids of yesterday...
My big brother had a real MG sports car circa 1976. He once drove me home from a Welsh holiday and we listened to Diana and Marvin the album on his cassette player. Happy memory that so thanks Looey. I wonder how popular Yesteryear and Lledo oldtimers actually were with kids?
DeleteSeveral different Bentleys were used in The Avengers, from different years and with different body styles, but all fairly similar in appearance. The Airfix kit was of the 1930 4 1/2 litre Supercharged version in racing trim - the supercharger is the object at the front, between the front wheels. In addition to the normal 1/32 scale kit, there was also a 1/12 scale Superkit. And that totally exhausts my knowledge of Bentleys.
ReplyDeleteAs a boy I never had any of the Yesteryears - they were larger and more expensive that regular Matchbox models. Much later, in the 1990s, it was the Lledo range that got me interested in collecting die-casts - mainly the various Star Car sets that Lledo put out, such as Goodnight Sweetheart, Forces Sweethearts (WW2 singers and actresses), Coronation Street, although not all my sets were complete. In some cases I just had one or two models. I did have a few tinplate friction vintage cars, and the little plastic toy I sent you photos of in reply to an earlier post. I think there may also have been one or two Hot Rod models based on vintage cars, but that would be about it for me.
Thanks Paul. You know your cars. I used to look out for prestige cars when I was a kid, real ones, on the roads of Lancashire! Bentleys, Rolls' and my favourite, Daimlers. We once had a reader and an occasional contributor who was fascinated with Rolls Royces. I think he'd even seen the original Lady Penelope pink one! Thanks for reminding me about your LN car photo's, I may have forgotten to post them! Doh!
