I enjoyed watching this old TV ad above for TSR's Dungeon's and Dragons from 1983. I never got into this whole thing unfortunately as I reckon I would have enjoyed the social fantasy vibe.
Were you a TSR fan?
Did you like the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon or the film with Jeremy Irons?
Watching the TV ad reminded me of the now famous opening of Netflix's own homage to TSR Eighties childhoods, Stranger Things. Here the young heroes enjoy a frenetic game of dungeons and dragons that either causes or reflects what happens next with the Demogorgon.
Have you seen Stranger Things? All episodes?
Was the Demogorgon a real TSR figure?
I in a few groups that run roleplaying games. One is local, face to face around a table (though not during this plague)... the others are online.
ReplyDeleteThe D&D cartoon never interested me though... and I've heard the movie is awful.
I did watch Stranger Things though, all the way through. Demogorgon was/is actually a monster in D&D... and the figure they have for it in the show is one I've got on a shelf here, I bought it long ago.
It's not too late for you to give D&D or some other RPG a try. It's pretty popular these days and there are lots of people playing it online during this crisis.
Interesting Knobgobbler. Its a scene I admire and have admired from afar for years. I was aware of it in the Seventies when White Dwarf hit the shelves - I bought a very early copy - and TSR rose in popularity. I even bought some tiny die-cast gaming figures of an orc and some samurai, which lurk here somewhere. I saw an old TSR catalogue online recently. I was amazed how much they released. I wonder if Stranger Things has rekindled interest in RPG? by the sounds of it you and your group-mates have been playing fine for ages!
