As my recent posts on the Century 21 Captain Scarlet toys turned out to be pretty popular with quite a few people, and in some cases brought back a few memories I thought I'd dig out a few of my old Dinky toy photos showing the Dinky Spectrum Patrol Car, Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle and Maximum Security Vehicle.
Unlike the C21 toys, all these die casts are generally common place, loose or boxed, and none are particularly hard to come by. Prices vary of course, and there's a always a few unrealistically priced ones.
The other good thing about them is like most vintage Dinky toys they are very easily restored to former glory, and there's plenty of spare parts available, including replica packaging.
As usual for me I can never resist taking photos of them in vaguely realistic surroundings - S.I.G.
Great pics again. The best selling Dinky toy of all time and one of the most popular British diecast toys ever. Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThanks Yorkie. The best selling Dinky die cast,eh, it's not surprising.:)
DeleteYou never fail to make these toys look totally at home in an outside environment... Dinky SPV is truly an iconic toy.
ReplyDeleteAh shucks, thanks Iain. They are timeless toys, though. Cheers
Deletespv how when i was a nipper wished to drive one
ReplyDeleteDriving it backwards using a TV screen means it would take a bit of getting used to, I reckon. ;)
DeleteI was born on the 27th December and suffered from the curse of Christmas / Birthday present syndrome. When these were released they went to the top of my want list. Come Christmas morning I eagerly unwrapped the pressie that I assumed was them..SPV ..yes!!..patrol car..yes!!..SPV...no!!. I had to wait 2 days to complete the set. Scarred for life.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds very traumatic, Chris, but 2 days soon passes ;D
DeleteIt is incredible to see these iconic toys in "real" settings, as any self-respecting Supermarionation fan surely wanted to see them back in the day. I loved, loved, loved the Dinky CS series, and you have really brought that rare vibe back to life. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks Zigg. I must admit I much prefer to see things in dioramas.:)
DeleteThanks for the post. The diorama's are brilliant. SPV was my favourite Dinky as a kid and had lots of fun playing scenarios with it.Loved the pilots door.
ReplyDeleteThanks Eric The SPV is certainly popular. I must admit I have a liking for the Patrol Car too.

ReplyDeleteSome Dinkys suffered from poorly thought out designs though. The SPV was so heavy that just placing it gently on the carpet or giving it a light push caused the missile hatch to pop up. You had to keep pushing it down repeatedly, and sometimes you just had to give up and leave the flap open. (Also, the first TB2 was badly designed, because they didn't take into account that kids would push out the pod when the legs were down, causing them to break because they were so flimsy. That apart, great toys though.
ReplyDeleteYes, you're right about that hatch Kid, it's very sensitive, a similar problem came with the original Corgi James Bond Aston Martin DB5 and the pop out machine guns.
DeleteThe first Thunderbird 2, although the right colour was rivetted so when the little spindly legs broke you couldn't even take the toy apart to change them. At least the later ones were screwed together.
