Hi Woodsy!
I like the recent natter re. the SpaceX moon buggy.
As it was the "one that got away" for me as a kid, I share your loss!
I liked your recent comments on Walnut Whips. They were never a big thing with me, but my Ex-pat Brit boss on "Razorback" Bad Bob McCarron LOVED them!
My favourite snack were Burton's Potato Puffs - Tomato flavour.
Not only do I miss them, but so apparently does an entire cadre of English Baby Boomers, because they are no longer made.
Period.
Well, I'm known for making fake nostalgia food, so I decided to make some EDIBLE nostalgia food!
After a few taste experiments, I found the Aussie "Jumpys" snack is fairly similar in taste, if you can find the plain salt variety (I've only seen them in multi-packs)
At first I tried to flavour them with Tomato packet soup, but it just wasn't right, so I started a search for proper tomato powder and finally bought some online.
I spooned some powder into an opened pack and shook vigorously...
and.... voila! As close as I've tasted to the original Burton's Puffs since the 1960's!
- with a suitably kangaroo-shaped Aussie accent!
Did YOU like Burton's Potato Puffs?

I'm so old I can only remember the plain salted ones, I did also come from a small village so perhaps they were the only ones stocked. Jump's also hit the spot but nobody stocks them around High Wycombe... about time we found somebody to make puffs again. How about making them the great post Brexit come back snack??? I'd vote for that!
ReplyDeletePotato Puffs! Yes! Bring them back! Hula hoops are just not the same!
DeleteLoved the red potato puffs, think it must of been sweet paprika. Please bring them back. Would give my walkers cheese n onion up for the original barbeque puffs.
ReplyDeleteSweet paprika, what a great flavour!
DeleteOmg that took me right back, I loved beef and salt and vinegar they were around in the late 80s
ReplyDeleteWe last saw them in 2004 at a Parfetts Cash and Carry, Aintree Liverpool. My wife and I couldn’t resist buying two boxes each of Ready Salted, Salt and Vinegar and Beef. Our kids loved them, as much as did we, in consequence, they just magically disappeared within a week.
ReplyDeletePlease bring them back! Some crisp makes are bringing retro crisps back in. Please can Burtons do the same with these.
