I so recall that sweet doughy smell from my childhood. Very pleasant and fragrant in a floury sort of way. Not as strong as plasticene. Play Doh has just the same aroma now!
I know because Moonbase Junior got some for Crimbo.
Smells are so hard to describe though. Like taste I suppose.
The memory of smells is just as foggy as in my experience you only recall a smell when you smell it again. Its impossible to remember mentally!
Do you have any memories of childhood whiffs and smalls readers? Maybe Christmas niffs or some very specific toys and models?
A good number of years ago I was walking along a street and was hit by a sudden whiff of disinfectant from somewhere. It immediately reminded me of the boys toilets in my primary school when I was a kid, as I was always asking the teacher if I could go to the toilet when I felt bored with whatever subject we were being taught. (I didn't tell her that last bit.) I'd kill 5 minutes or so in their cool environs, listening to water running through the cisterns, before reluctantly returning to the classroom. So whenever I smell disinfectant, I remember my primary school toilets. (Just as well I wasn't the janitor, eh?)
ReplyDeleteGreat nose memory Kid! ha ha. Quiet moments listening to cisterns! Love it!
DeleteI can't agree about not remembering smells Woodsy. I can recall them without re-smelling them. In fact I can even sense them in dreams sometimes.
ReplyDeleteAs for childhood toy related smells, how about that metallic 'burning' smell from heavily used friction drives ? Anyone else pick up on that ?
Mish.
Oh yes, what a niff Mish, those friction drives. Like burnt oil. Superb. I didn't like the related Meths smell of Steam Engines. Yuk!
