I took these shots in a German museum I think. Back in 2010.
I liked the space toy and robot display. I appreciated the Smash Martian's appearance, which I had thought was uniquely British but I suppose Smash was everywhere!
The Mr. Machine always appeals to me too - the red flat plastic bot lower left. I saw one at York Car Boot this summer for £30. Its a Marvin Glass design.
Dux Astroman is always fascinating to see, lower centre. Perhaps Germany's finest space toy, its combo of translucent green plastic body and white helmet head is unique.
Directly above it is a Golem made of what looks like clay. A robot-like creature of myth, the Golem was sufficiently monstrous to get the horror film treatment in Der Golem in 1915, now partially lost. One hundred years later the thing of clay got another turn in the Limehouse Golem in 2016.
What else is in there readers?
Also in the displays were these unusual running figures. I had thought that they were aliens but on looking again now they appear to be skirted [females?] and holding a bayoneted rifle. The hook on the heads may have been part of a game of some kind.
Anyone recognise them?
Bottom right, I spot a classic HK plastic Star Wars KO robot, with distinctive Stormtrooper head. They fall in to your 'cuckoo category', Woodsy. Unlicensed, I think they were variously sold as Super Robot and Super Astronaut, amongst other shelf names.
ReplyDeleteAt a stretch, I wonder if the strange bayonet charging smilers were originally someone's odd interpretation of highland infantry?
On the left of the Stormtrooper head robo - Steel Jeeg (really popular in Italy)

Bottom, center - the one with yellow "jaw" and Pinokio's nose - Tetsujin 28 (Gigantor in USA)

Upper far left side - red one with clear "head" - Robby the Robot

Nice observations Tony and Ranalc. I do like those KO Star Wars robots. Reminds me of the Godzilla headed one I had. Jeeg, thats a new one me. As for Robby, he's the King of bots. I still haven't seen him in his other film, The Invisible Boy. Have you Ran?
DeleteHi Woodsy!
ReplyDeleteThe "alien with rifle figure" should be the first know example of a space-related toy soldier, the Elastolin "Moon-Man":

But again, re-reading the AD post, it could be that it was non space-related. Your post IMO reopen the issue, considering where you have seen it...

Fascinating SR. Maybe that's why I took the picture. Maybe it said Moon Men but to be hnest I can't recall. Elastolin was a German form wasn't it?
