In reference to the Fraser Hines/ Dr. Who blog post earlier in the summer Terranova47 commented:
The second Doctor episodes were playing when I was in Art School. One of the other students [Deirdre Newman] was a daughter of Sydney Newman, the creator of Dr Who. After the first episode played showing the metallic sphere rolling along the ground someone rolled a plastic ball across the art studio floor past her and we all fell about laughing at her reaction".
Since then Terranova47 has kindly supplied further memories and the above old photograph [names in brackets inserted by Woodsy].
Hello Woodsy
I don't think Deirdre had any influence with her father [Sydney] regarding Dr Who, as by then he had placed the show in the care of Verity Lambert the original producer of the show.
Lets not forget he had stated 'No Bug Eyed Monsters in the show' when he wrote the guidelines before it first aired and then the first 'monster/alien' was a Dalek! He wasn't amused!
Deirdre's mother [Elizabeth] was a Primary School teacher who amongst her students were the kids of the College's Head of Department. As a result Deirdre organised the photo shot attached. It was our 'class' Xmas card that year, 1967, for the staff. I'm kneeling on the right.
The last I heard of Dierdre was that she worked on the documentary film about Hornsey College of Arts' Sit-In the summer of 1968 and then worked as an animator for the credits of the movie "The Charge of the Light Brigade".
About then her father [Sydney] moved back to Canada.

Additional Notes by Woodsy:
1. Deirdre Newman's entry on IMDb
2. The Hornsey Film can be watched for free on the BFI Player
3. Sydney Newman's memoir Head of Drama contains an afterword by Deirdre Newman.
Is it Deirdre in the photo Terran?
ReplyDeleteYes, the cigarette is just role playing. The BFI Player will not work for north America but I do have a VHS tape from the producer of the film that does play here. Enjoy the 41 bus! That route linked a number of the Hornsey Annex buildings to the main one in Crouch End.
