This is the MOON X by Tomy.
Its a toy rocket completely new to me.
I saw these pictures on Yahoo Japan and there was very little information.
There appears to be a string coming out of the nose. Does anyone know what that's for?
Any other info gratefully received!
WOTAN wades in:
Im really pleased you've found this Woodsy, I wondered what it was since I found this ad on a pay per view site years ago! Over to you for translation!
At the risk of lowering the tone completely (but only if you remember the Young Ones) re. the string . . . "Mousey, mousey . . . mousey want a drinkey!"
ReplyDeleteLooks a bit like the Airfix 'lego' rocket!

Ha ha, I loved the Young Ones Hugh! Prime Time punk!
DeleteWell, I've no solid info about it but will make an educated guess or two based on the above pics.
ReplyDeleteThe rocket, helo and plane all have the same thing, just on top of the latter two.
Looking at the closeups of the Moon X, the tip comes off with a twist and pull, which to me, indicates there is something more under that piece than just a secure spot to tie a bit of string.
The advert shows the Moon X and the tilt rotor hanging over head of the child. So we can make the observation that perhaps there is more string on a spool underneath that blue cone. Since these are battery operated, perhaps there was a button or two on the remote that controlled the spool and made the toy go up or down for take off/landing recreation. This would work for all 3 of the vehicles with this cone on them. The cone being easily removable instead of glued in place/molded in indicates to me it is there to open up and untangle the string when it gets snarled around the mechanism.
Purely a guess until I see one first hand or an instruction sheet/video.
Also, the plane is actually a tilt rotor!
Fabulous observations Lance. The lower title of the advert is Cable Toys and Space Construction Toys. The cable toys are the three top vehicles including the rocket. I agree with you, it looks like the toys descended and maybe ascended on a 'cable' ie. the string we can see and as you say the rest of it we can't see. Great looking toys and I also like the construction toys a lot too. Cheers.
DeleteBob Aucutt here. I cannot address the Rocket, but I just received the first two of the three Tomy Astro series construction vehicles from Yahoo Japan, and they are awesome. The third vehicle (the claw), is enroute to me. I will send some pics. I really do not know if these were sold outside of Japan during the 80s.
ReplyDeleteHey that's super cool Bob. Can't wait to see the pics of your Tomy Astros! Cheers.
