There's a Stephen King season of movies starting on UK TV's Horror Chanel soon.
I've seen loads of these films already but I'm always happy to watch most of the King movies again.
Where I've read the book its fun to compare the novel with what's on the screen. Salem's Lot really sticks on my mind. I really enjoyed the book and thought the David Soul flick was excellent.
Having seen Thinner again recently I particularly like the film and the performance of the central character, who is cursed by a Gypsy elder.

Do you have a favourite Stephen King film or book readers?
Are there any King collectables?
I love the Dark Tower series. The Stand was also excellent. The books not the movies or miniseries.
ReplyDeleteNot read either although I have had The Stand in the bookshelf. Not sure where it went. Is the Dark Tower recent tsold?
DeleteMay sound trendy but IT was a really strong reading experience back in the 80's, and not only for making it through its 1100+ pages. It was my "tram read" and I remember always looking eagerly forward to the next chance to continue. A book you did not want to put down once started.
ReplyDeleteOn the movie side, it is kind of unfair for all the other contestants - some of them excellent as well - that The Shining is so overwhelmingly unsurpassable, in a league of its own (and Mr. King's well-known opinion does not count here).
Not read IT but loved the original flick with Tim Curry as Pennywise. Scared the hell out of my daughter! A sort of Stand By Me for horror fans. As for the Shining, yep, its often cited as the best horror film of all time. I've not read the book, which I'd like to now! Heeeeeere's Johnny!
DeleteI think Arto's spot on, Woodsy. The Shining is a seminal movie production on many levels! As for collectibles - There are a couple 1/6 scale Jack Torrence action figures available to the collector. One is called 'The Screaming', and the other more recent figure is called 'The Shocking'. I don't think there's a lot to choose between them. Both appear to be high end on detail and quality :)
ReplyDeleteThe Screaming and the Shocking! Love it Tone! You could have The Brining for a coastal version or The Shinning for a clogging version! ha ha. Those figures do sound good though Tone. I have an old VHS tape of the Shining, which is the only collectable I have.
DeleteYou get the red card... and consider yourself sent off for The shinning, Woodsy, ha ha :)
