The other day I remembered that my daughter had a plastic tree house when she was a kid.
I think it was Fischer Price or maybe Playskool.
Shaped like a mushroom, it got me thinking about the most famous toy tree house, the Star Wars one by Kenner, a sort of Endor playset for Ewoks.
But there was another tree house wasn't there. Kenner again I think, the Planet of the Apes tree house.
Are these two Kenner tree houses related?
Anyone got them?
I think your mushroom shaped treehouse was called The Family Treehouse and it housed little figures called the Tree Tots. This was in fact made by Kenner,so it is related to Ewok village at least by brand.Mego had the big contract for anything Planet of the Apes, and I think there was a "Jungle House" that housed both the Apes and Action Jackson. An unreleased treehouse, or "Tribal Lair" was planned for Mego's short-lived One Million BC collection.I've seen pictures of the prototype, but apparently none exist today.A shame, as this line is really cool,I have one of the caveman dolls and the Tyrannosaurus Rex, which I understand is very rare.
ReplyDeleteFascinating that Brian. Fancy sending me a snap of the Mego caveman and the TRex for the blog?
DeleteI know this is a little late, but I just stumbled across an Ewok tree house from Kenner on Ebay that is EXACTLY like the Tree Tots house from the 70's.It did exist and I didn't even know it!
DeleteMPC made a couple of Planet of the Apes playsets around 1974-75, I think. At least one included trees joined by bridge walkway, Woodsy. I love these MPC POTA sets, but don't have a set of my own yet... just a couple of the loose apes so far... but it's a good start :)
ReplyDeleteYep, POTA was a sensational series when it first aired. I invested in a lovely POTA rack toy from the late Sixties about 15 years ago. Bought oit at the NEC. A series of plastic apes on horses and a small plastic pistol or rifle. I'm unsure now as I sold it on my toy stall in the late 90's. I can see why you like the MPC sets. Send us a snap of your loose apes for the blog Tone!
DeleteHere's the POTA target Set I had. By Multiple Toymakers from 1967. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ylqRezckstk/UD9Jda3hrlI/AAAAAAAASjY/TTl1IDEdJEw/s1600/Planet+of+the+Apes+Multiple+Set.jpg
ReplyDeleteAh... now that's a wonderful set, Woodsy. So much vintage nostalgia attached to these simplistic old toys from a bygone time. Pics on their way of my loose MPC apes :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing that Brian. Can you send me a pic of the Tree Tots house or a link to one. Thanks!
