When we were recently in Liverpool we visited the huge gothic style Cathedral on St. James Mount.
Whilst walking through its sunken park and graveyard we photographed the mausoleum on the hill just as the light was fading.
A strange green light is emanating from the window!

The liverpool crypt immediately made me think of the old Arrow paperback cover of Dracula's Guest.
It was one of the most startling illustrations I had ever seen as a kid horror fan and it has stayed with me ever since.
I think it's the muted tones of the stone biulding that appeal but more particularly the movement: the falling victim, the running wolves and most strikingly the flying skeleton.
The cover scared me to death as a nipper when I found this book in my parent's bookcase but that bookcase sparked a love of horror novels and a passion for collecting them.

Writing this has put me in the mood for one of my favourite films of the Sixties, the classic anthology Tales from the Crypt, the ideal nostalgic movie to watch today, my birthday!
Now that's a haunting photo, Woodsy. The makings of a good horror movie there. I like it ! But then I like the moody atmosphere of old graveyards, especially in Autumn/Winter. Coincidentally, I live next to a large cemetery. There are two distinct parts to it. An open plan modern section, on top of a hill and out of my line of sight. And an older Victorian part in clear view, which is suitably overgrown and wonderfully atmospheric on a foggy night. Wandering through the tall trees, bushes and ivy, it's easy to bump into many a looming weather beaten memorial of a bygone life from a world.
ReplyDeleteWow Tone, you live next to a cemetery! Blimey, your'e a braver man than me. The gothic motherlode! Those nocturnal strolls sound positively eerie, inspiration for another haunted article maybe Tone?
DeleteI've nothing to fear from next door, Woodsy. Not when Mrs K's thankfully here to protect me! Besides, I sleep with the lights on :D
