When the weekend came when you were kids did anything special happen in the evenings?
The stand-out evening for me in the Sixties was Saturday or 'Pop and Crisps night', when I'd go with my Dad in his car to the 'offy' on Wellington Road in Ashton, Preston.
Here I'd stock up on sweets, toffees and fizzy pop...... and maybe a bag of crisps with a little sachet of salt in them! I loved to stuff as many different things in my gob at once! Yum!
What did you do readers?
The early 70's Friday nights was family TV night.Chances were if we waited until about 9:00 we would ind some sort of monster/sci fi action on the tube, but before then we would make do with The Brady Bunch and Partridge Family on prime time.We lived in a town that had no less than a dozen Pizza shops, so that was often the snack of choice. There were also old fashioned Italian markets nearby, and often my dad would pop in and buy a fresh loaf of Italian bread, some sliced salami, a wedge of extra sharp provolone cheese, and some mixed marinated olives from the deli counter and we'd make like the ancient Romans, feasting on the couch. There was also outings on occasion, such as our local drive in theater,or amusements at the shore were close by.Dad passed away this last November, and I find comfort in re visiting these fun timesThanks to him, it's been a good life for my family.
ReplyDeleteSounds idyllic Brian! I'm so sorry about your Dad. I love the image of you all feasting like Romans. The whole area sounds Italian! Its weird how monsters and horror got and get such a bad press - the scourge of the innocents and all that - but it sounds to me that monster movies and sci-fi brought families together on weekend nights back then!
DeleteFriday nights were Creature Feature night. Not that the show was always called that... but I was a fanatic about never missing the local horror movie host, whether it was in Los Angeles (can't recall his name) or Las Vegas (The Vegas Vampire! and later, Count Cool Rider).
ReplyDeleteIn Vegas they often replayed the horror movie again on Saturday morning, so I'd try to catch that too.
Saturdays were usually the day my parents would drive us all to town and we'd go to the mall and such... if I was lucky I could talk them into going to the comic book store and buy me some old Mad magazines.
Now that's a phenomenon we just didn't really have here in the UK - horror movie hosts - at least not in my experience [anyone else?]. The Vegas Vampire! ha ha, that's great. We have other Vages readers, I wonder if they saw that too! As for repeats of monster films on Saturday morning, that would have had to have been Christmas here in the UK, when old black and whites were shown like Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein! I can hear him now...Chiiiiip!
DeleteAnd there there was MAD. What a comic. I read my brothers' stack back then. Alfred E Neumann was the bees knees. My favourite bit was the page that folded in a special way to create a whole new funny image! Genius!
