Doctor Who conventions are an option, but while I'm enjoying Peter Capadi in the role, I not really interested in conventions that simply deal with the rebooted series.
One convention did catch my eye - Genesis 2016, a good old fashioned fan run event taking place at the Newcastle Gateshead Marriot Hotel MetroCentre on Saturday 4th and 5th June.
The biggest problem is tracking it down to book it. It's under Dimensions Events on line and most of the updates are on Facebook, which might go some way to explaining why its struggling to get people to sign up.
I think its worth supporting and judging by the guests attending, subject to the usual conditions who seem to cover pretty much the whole Doctor Who timeline it could well be worth the effort to book the weekend and get back to some classic Doctor Who fandom.
Some of the guests announced so far are William Russell and Carole Anne Ford who featured in the early William Hartnell stories, along with Waris Hussien who directed those early episodes.
Katy Manning who played Jo Grant opposite Jon Pertwee's Doctor.
Louise Jameson who played Leela opposite Tom Baker's Doctor. Tom has agreed to take part in a live video link which Louise will host.
Peter Miles who appeared in three serials over the years but is probably best known as the Nyder in the classic, 'Genesis of The Daleks'.
Sophie Aldred who played Ace opposite Sylvester McCoy's Doctor.
A familiar face for followers of the series' reboot and a kind of link to the classic show is Jemma Redgrave who plays The Brig's daughter Kate, and current head of U.N.I.T.
These are just some of the guests, and the whole weekend sounds like it could be just what I'm looking for, so much so that I've already booked it.
That weekend looks superb Scoop. The only actor you've shown that I rea;;y recall is 'Jo Grant'. From a toy point of view its interesting that Tom Baker's Doctor and Leela got to be action dolls. I've bought and sold a Tom Baker bur never a Leela or indeed the Giant Robot.
ReplyDeleteYou don't recall any of the other actors or actresses, Woodsy, and yet you've mentioned Leela played by Louise Jameson! You know more than you think! ; )
DeleteThe weekend sounds really good to me, especially as it features some actors and directors from the classic serials.
I had both the Denys Fisher Tom Baker doll (whose likeness was based on New Avenger Gareth Hunt!) and Leela, as well as a Tardis for them, bought at a jumble sale way back in the mid seventies. The only Denys Fisher figure I've got now is the Dalek.
