Saddened to hear that George Barris , the car customizer responsible for the iconic 1966 Batmobile, has passed away aged 89. Our sincere sympathies to his family.
As well as the Batmobile, Mr Barris worked on many other television custom jobs and modifications like The Munster Koach, KITT from Knight Rider and the General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard.
He was such a huge talent and the architect of so much pop culture. The Batmobile alone defined a generation and is as strong as ever. A sad day Scoop but he has left behind a lasting legacy of icons.
ReplyDeleteVery true, Woodsy
DeleteA real shame. He sold the original Batmobile just a few years ago for several million. Although I've got two of the original Corgi Toys version, I wish they'd re-release it.
ReplyDeleteA re-release would be great - its not like they couldn't do it. It would certainly be a much better choice than the re-issued Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or The Yellow Submarine.
DeleteThey wanted to re-release it back in the '90s, but because of the copyright problems surrounding the car, were unable to do so. That's why they eventually decided to release the '60s comicbook version of the car, as well as others. However, the copyright thing has all been sorted out now, so it should be possible for Corgi to reissue the TV car if they wanted to.
DeleteLet's hope so Kid.
